The New York Giants offense has been rather unproductive in the first three preseason games during the summer; as they've scored 51 combined points, but have only managed to score two total touchdowns in that span; the rest has been mostly on the right leg of kicker Josh Brown who has kicked quite a few field goals for the team.
Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning knows he's not in any danger of losing his starting job, even if he did go 8-for-20 with just 83 yards against the New York Jets this past Saturday, but he has not been pleased with the way the offense has been playing in the preseason and told Paul Schwartz of the New York Post that the group overall needs to play better to see better results.
“We have to play better,” Manning said. “We have to be better in the red zone and convert on third downs, so there’s some room for improvement.’’
What's concerning is the two touchdowns the Giants have scored were on long gains; a 57-yard pass play from Manning to Victor Cruz and an 84-yard carry from David Wilson. Other than that, it's been a lot of missed opportunities; especially on third downs; a 24.5 percentage; which is why the Giants have either been kicking field goals or having Steve Weatherford punt. The starters for the Giants will be in for about 12-15 plays in Thursday night's preseason finale against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Even though they won't be in there for very long, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he wants to see some consistency and execution.
“I’d like to see some continuity and some execution, some performance,’’ coach Tom Coughlin said. “I’d like to see us get the ball in the end zone. I’d like to see us do well on third down. I’d like to see our passing game with our protection look like some type of an efficient operation. I’d like to see progress. That’s really what I would like to see.’’
After tonight's preseason game, the Giants will have 10 days to figure out the offense and get on the same page before the open up the regular season on September 8 at AT&T Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
