It's been a bit of musical chairs for the New York Giants offensive line this summer due to the injury bug hitting them before the season started. With both David Baas and David Diehl's injuries, it gave Jim Cordle a chance to shine at the center position this past weekend against the New York Jets in the third week of the preseason.
Cordle was really bad in the Giants first-team offensive line; looking lost and allowing defenders to blow right by him and past him; something head coach Tom Coughlin and offensive line coach Pat Flaherty took notice of in Saturday's 24-21 overtime loss at MetLife Stadium.
In Monday's practice, the Giants shuffled their line around even more as Kevin Boothe moved back to center and to take Boothe's spot at left guard, the Giants had backup right tackle James Brewer to left guard, a move that has been speculated about during the offseason to see if Brewer can get going and into the lineup.
Cordle had demoted to the second team offense and with the final roster cuts coming before August 31, you might have to wonder if Cordle gets cut by that time for failing to impress in his first audition against live competition that wasn't against his own teammates in practice.
Brewer is now being given a golden opportunity to make a name for himself on the Giants starting offensive line, who has spent most of his time with the Giants as a backup right tackle, but has never made an NFL start in his young career.
Brewer is a former fourth-round pick of the Giants back in the 2011 NFL Draft out of the University of Indiana and likely should see a start at left guard when the Giants play their final preseason game of the summer on Thursday night against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
