It's been a long, long time since New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas played in a live game. But on Saturday night against the New York Jets, the veteran looked like he hasn't missed a beat. In his first game back in two years, Thomas played approximately 24 snaps and appeared to be flying all over the field. And while there were a few minor hiccups, the most important part of his return is that he walked away completely healthy.
"I got out there [and] was able to make some plays. Got some stuff I have to work on, but walked out of the game healthy and just want to keep building like I was saying at the start of training camp," Thomas said. "I think I had a good showing and the biggest thing for me is health."
The box score shows Thomas with three total tackles, but he was in on a lot more plays than that. Tom Coughlin and Perry Fewell moved him all over the field; they had him blitzing, in man coverage and in zone coverage. Overall, he looked as good as you could expect — although he did miss on tackle in the backfield that was ultimately called back for offensive holding.
Ultimately, Thomas feels he just needs more time on the field and to get reaccustomed to the speed of the game.
"Obviously, I need to work on my timing," he added. "That’s one thing we couldn’t get a lot of experience on, but I got out there, blitzed, I fell, I covered, I tackled. I think I had a good showing for my first preseason game after two years so I’m happy with the results."
Coughlin wouldn't commit to his starters playing at all this coming Thursday against the New England Patriots, but Thomas won't likely be lumped into that group. Chances are he'll see another 12-20 snaps in an effort to prepare him for the regular season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
