Just 24 hours after the New York Giants played their third preseason game of the summer and lost 24-21 in overtime to the New York Jets, head coach Tom Coughlin and General Manager Jerry Reese had to do the toughest part of their jobs on Sunday.
With teams required to get their rosters down to 75 players by the middle of the week, the Giants decided to make the necessary moves needed and released 14 players, along with placing starting safety Stevie Brown on season-ending injured reserve with the news of him tearing his ACL in Saturday night's loss to the Jets.
The players released from the Giants are as follows:
- Ben Guidugli, FB
- Brandon Collins, WR
- Terrence Sinkfield, WR
- Jaime Childers, TE
- Chase Clement, TE
- Aaron Curry, LB
- Jake Mussau, LB
- Etinne Sabino, LB
- Frank Okam, DT
- Laron Scott, DB
- Junior Mertile, DB
- Alonzo Tweedy, DB
- Michael Jasper, OL
- Austin Holtz, OL
The most notable release on the list was Curry, who had signed a one-year deal with the Giants back in May, but was surpassed on the depth chart by Kyle Bosworth, who got quite a bit of playing time on Saturday against the Jets and really looked impressive on defense. Curry was a former first-round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks back in the 2009 NFL Draft and is currently trying to rejuvenate his career in the league.
Collins, another notable cut by the Giants, was suspended by the NFL in late June for four games for violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy, so if he is to be signed by a team, he wouldn't be eligible to play until Week 5.
The Giants will have to get the roster from 75 down to the final 53 players before the deadline of August 31.
