In the last week, the New York Giants have had to shuffle around their offensive line due to two major injuries that took place with David Baas suffering a sprained MCL in his knee that has sidelined him for 3-6 weeks and David Diehl needing surgery on his right thumb and will miss at least six weeks recovering.
On the final day of training camp for the Giants, the team once again had to do some re-shuffling on the line, as Kevin Boothe, who was temporarily at center with Baas out, moves back to his natural left guard spot with Diehl on the sidelines; while veteran backup Jim Cordle gets promoted to the starting center position.
Cordle was re-signed by the Giants to a one-year deal in early April and has played most of his games with the team on the field goal and extra point teams as an extra blocker, but hasn't seen much time as the center with both Baas and Boothe in front of him. Due to the injuries though, the 26-year-old Cordle is given the opportunity to show the coaches that he can be the temporary go-to guy at center in the starting lineup.
Boothe's move back to guard means the Giants will likely have three of their five starters from last season at their natural positions with Will Beatty at left tackle and Chris Snee at right guard. Rookie first-rounder Justin Pugh has been bumped up to the starting lineup and will play at right tackle for the team.
Unless something drastic changes between now and Saturday night, expect the starting offensive line against the Jets to be Beatty, Boothe, Cordle, Snee and Pugh.
