Perhaps the biggest play of the season for the New York Giants came in week seven against the Washington Redskins. After falling behind 23-20 with 1:32 left on the clock, Eli Manning and the Giants offense took the field hoping for another fourth quarter comeback that has become the norm for them in recent years. Following an incomplete pass to Ahmad Bradshaw, Manning connected with wide receiver Victor Cruz on 2nd-and-10 for a game-winning 77-yard touchdown. The crowd went ballistic.

The play, which helped the Giants improve to 5-2 on the season, has now been nominated for "2012 Play of the Year" by the NFL. In addition to this nomination, Cruz's 77-yard touchdown has also been nominated for the "GMC Never Say Die Moment of the Year."

Unfortunately, Cruz touchdown isn't the Giants' sole representation for 2012 Play of the Year, but they were on the wrong side of the alternative. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Eric Wright is also nominated for his pick-six against the Giants in week two of the regular season.

This sort of reminds me of the argument in baseball about the MVP. Can a player be the MVP if his team finishes 3rd, 4th or whatever. Couldn’t they have finished 3rd, 4th or whatever without him no matter how well he played? Ergo, the Giants didn’t make the playoffs so could Victor’s 77 yard touchdown have been the play of the year?

I don’t honestly have the answer in either case, but thought it was an interesting argument.
