New York Giants Quietly Extended Perry Fewell’s Contract Through 2013

On Monday, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said he did not anticipate any coaching staff changes going into the offseason. That, of course, included Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell, who everyone thought was at the end of his contract with the team. As it turns out however, Fewell was previously given a contract extension through 2013 after helping the Giants to win Super Bowl XLVI.

In fact, not only was Fewell given an extension, but Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that the entire assistant coaching staff was quietly given contract extensions. And yes, that means offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride as well.

It remains possible that with major coaching turnover across the NFL Fewell and Gilbride could become the focus of a team in need of a head coach, but as of Tuesday morning, no organization had asked permission to speak to them. That said, there has been some mild speculation that Fewell could get a look in Buffalo as a possible replacement for Chan Gailey.

Short of finding employment elsewhere, both Fewell and Gilbride will return to the Giants in 2013.
