The New York Giants are perhaps one of the most inconsistent football teams in the NFL today. However, when they're at their best, they are the best. That level of dominance was put on display in week six against the San Francisco 49ers, in week 12 against the Green Bay Packers and, to some degree, in week 14 against the New Orleans Saints. So when Big Blue defensive end Osi Umenyiora was asked if the New England Patriots were the NFL's elite team going into week 15, he said no.
"When the Giants are playing our best, there's no question we're the best team in football," Umenyiora said during a ESPN 98.7 on Tuesday. "We've just been inconsistent. So if we can play the way we're capable of playing – the way we played against San Francisco, the way we played against Green Bay, the way we played against the Saints for the majority of the game – I don't think there's a team that's better than us at all."
Umenyiora and the Giants will have another opportunity to prove themselves this Sunday when they travel to Georgia to take on the 11-2 Atlanta Falcons, who are coming off a 30-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers and looking to avenge an embarrassing 24-2 loss to the Giants in last year's divisional playoff round. In fact, it's a game they marked on their schedule early in the season – around the same time wide receiver Roddy White was taking pot-shots at Victor Cruz.
"Victor Cruz is much more of a slot receiver," White said. "The big boys play on the outside."
Following the aforementioned divisional playoff loss, White also took aim at Cruz saying he was "in for a rude awakening" here in 2011. As fate would have it, Cruz never received such an awakening and currently ranks 11th in the NFL with 1,004 receiving yards and tied for second in the league with nine touchdown receptions – four more than White.
With a slim one-game lead in the NFC East, the Giants, led by Cruz and Umenyiora, will need to come out and be the "best" on Sunday or risk losing a handle on their playoff destiny.
