Well, so much for that. The San Francisco 49ers confirmed they have suspended Brandon Jacobs instead of releasing him, which would have allowed him to sign with the New York Giants or any other team.

Kyle Bonagura of CBSsports.com Tweets that the 49ers are calling it a suspension, after Bonagura's tweet that Jacobs was no longer a member of the team and had cleaned out his locker led us to believe he had been released.

The thought of #27 coming home to the Meadowlands got us giddy for a minute but it looks like the 49ers weren't willing to risk Jacobs playing for a fellow NFC contender.

So much for that. And so much for a fairy tale ending to what has got to be the worst year of Jacobs' career.
