The New York Giants won't return home until week five when they host the Cleveland Browns at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, but if the New Jersey State Senate has anything to say about it, that game will not be played.
In the wake of Monday nights debacle in Seattle, New Jersey State Senate President Stephen Sweeney plans to introduce legislation prohibiting any and all professional sporting events to be played in-state that are officiated by replacements. That would, of course, include Giants and New York Jets football games.
“This past weekend in the NFL has not only made a mockery of a great sport, but shined a very bright light on how important fully trained and professional officiating is to player safety,” said Sweeney. “We wouldn’t allow a factory or construction site to operate without fully trained supervisors on hand to ensure the safety of employees. Why should we do anything differently when the job site is a playing field?”
Sweeney feels all athletes on the field are in significant danger of injury due to the large number of bad calls, missed calls and overall ineptitude of the replacement officials. Case in point would be a helmet-to-helmet hit on Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey that resulted in him being taken off the field on a stretcher and to a local hospital after being knocked unconscious. No flag was thrown on the play.
“Whether the sport is football, soccer or baseball, when referees don’t know how to properly enforce the rules, there is a real chance for unnecessary and serious injury,” said Sweeney. “If the NFL insists on putting replacement officials on the field, putting players at risk, then the state shouldn’t be playing a part in that.”
On Monday morning, Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz acknowledged that the game has gotten much more physical and violent because players are taking advantage of the replacement officials. In other words, the New Jersey State Senate has (at least in their minds) legitimate ground to stand on here.

Great. Now we have to play all of our games on the road.
Wait a minute … we’re GREAT on the road! Woo hoo!
This stuff is getting crazy. Guess there’s no way I can possibly avoid political talk on this article. Oy.
If the New Jersey State Senate is in favor of it then I’m against it. Those clowns should never be allowed near the public purse or any matters of consequence whatsoever. What was the issue again?
ff55y – Are you a Marx Brothers fan by chance?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtMV44yoXZ0
I almost refused to marry my wife, who is as close to perfect as any human being I’ve ever met, because she does not love the Marx Brothers. That’s one great scene among thousands in their movies. I once argued with a professor that Groucho was the original American “ironist”, more creative than Samuel Clemens because there was much more of an edge to his commentary on American life than “Twain” usually could bring himself to be.
bring himself to write…I’m losing concentration trying to do three things at once…this damned work keeps getting in the way
The early Marx Brothers flicks like Horse Feathers, Duck Soup, The Coconuts, A Day at the Races, etc are absolute comedy classics.
To this day, I instinctively respond “swordfish” when anyone asks about a password.
Man, this worries me about Sunday night.
Let’s just say something like this happens in Philly to the Eagles, some wacko Eagles fan might actually stab one of the refs or a giants fan.
Hopefully we just blow them out and empty the stands by the third quarter. Problem solved. :-P
yep.
Just an FYI. I mentioned this during the Giants/Carolina game thread and the day after, but it’s nice to see the national commentariat take notice as well. From this week’s Peter King’s MMQB:
“Good instincts and intelligence, Jayron Hosley, the Giants rookie cornerback. Hosley, on a blitz of Cam Newton Thursday, wasn’t faked out by the nimble Newton. Then, when he contacted Newton as he released the ball, Hosley had the presence of mind to not drive him into the ground, but to slide off him and avoid a possible roughing penalty. That was a five-year-vet play by a third-round rookie”
Yup. Hosley doesn’t impress me as a particularly bright guy by conventional standards but he clearly has a lot of football intelligence. A lot like Corey Webster in that regard. And he is going to be a stud. I think Reese/Ross hit the jackpot this past April: Wilson, Randle, Hosley, two developmental offensive linemen, Kuhn, and Hill as an UDFA. That is one great haul.
So you’re saying you don’t think he writes his own blog entries on giants.com?? INCONCEIVABLE!
As for Trent Cole … he and all the Eagles can talk trash about us because they back it up. You could fill a book with all the times we’ve choked playing them. So yeah … they talk … because we’ve let them walk … all over us.
Yeah. Those zero Super Bowl titles and that 8-8 season last year. They certainly have enough to back it up!
This is like Congress insinuating themselves into the steroids issue in MLB.
I’d venture to guess the NJ State Senate has no jurisdiction to do this, but it gets them their 15 minutes of fame. This is getting stupider and stupider…as long as we’re making movie and literary references.
You are among the unfortunates who have to live in a state run by these fools. They should get a tsunami of e-mails telling them to do something about the moribund state economy (perhaps a bit of attention to THEIR pensions might be in order) and forget about football. Clowns.
Beware, never point out the emperor has no clothes…we all would miss ur posts if u were to disappear.
While I don’t disagree, ff55 our 2 states will give their electoral votes to Obama.
It is what it is.
Note to Dan: that was not a political statement, but rather a statement of fact :-)
All political statements are statements of “fact” by those who believe what they’re saying. Nonetheless…
I was joking, Dan. I apologize.
Repost: I fell behind the thread.
What little I know about this dispute boils down to outrageous labor demands in the one area that is hurting so many towns, counties and states. That is company sponsored pension plans with no contributions by employees. Much like teachers that work 9 months a year , are they then entitled to a retirement plan that sets them up for life and pays out 30 plus years and basically bankrupts the town in the process. The refs work just on Sundays for five months of the year, should they get a complete retirement for that on the backs of owners? I will take it a step further and say the players don’t deserve this type of plan either. The average career is under 5 years, should that give you a complete retirement package? How does that few years entitle you to lifetime medical benefits? Especially the old vets that werent included? These are outrageously expensive programs that are very hard to quantify the ultimate costs. Just because the NFL is making god money now is it right to saddle them with this type of unknown future liability? The owners are all big biz guys and that’s why their balking at what would seem a small amount of money.
In the real corporate world outside the NFL and the politics of buying votes from government unions nobody works for any company for 5 years and walks away with a fully funded six figure retirement plan. Not working for Apple or Exxon the richest companies in the world. The refs are asking something outrageous and this is the mentality that ultimately gets you a 16 trillion dollar national debt if you get sucked into caving on this to be a nice guy.
Don’t get sucked into the class warfare argument that the owners are rich or the league makes so many millions; either it’s fair to get a lifetime pension for working only Sundays for five months of the year for let’s say 10-15 years or it’s not. Simple question.

Now the politicians want to get involved, yet nobody is calling out the refs demands as I just posted. Right or wrong the owners have a point to be made, yet it’s not being discussed.
PS. It pains me to be on the side of Jerruh and Dan Snyder but in any dispute both sides deserve a fair shake regardless of their ego’s or wallets.
Great post. This issue is playing out all across the country from private enterprise to every level of government (townships, counties, state and federal). Unfortunately, most of our citizenry is oblivious to this issue. The unfunded liability of federal and state government worker pension/retirement benefits dwarfs the US national debt of $16 trillion.
ROAD WARRIORS!!!
Please remember this…..this is a lockout. Not a strike. The refs didn’t ask for this. The owners did. Did you stand beyond Jerruh, Dan et al when they locked out the players? This is a legitimate question. I don’t remember your stance.
The players should all unite and refuse to play. You’ll see how fast it gets solved.
