Preseason football is almost a month behind us and practice is reserved for days leading up to game day, right? This doesn’t ring true for all on the field, apparently. Additional sources are coming out, pouring in, and voicing their opinions on the current replacements refereeing/ lockout situation.
“There’s no doubt the integrity of the game has been compromised not having the regular officials out there. All I know is that we would all benefit from having the regular refs out there. That’s not to take a shot at the guys who are out there,” said Kiwanuka. “They’re doing as good a job as they can, because it takes years to perfect the skill of being an NFL ref. When you look around at some of the calls being missed, player safety is the big issue.”
DE Justin Tuck is another that will always speak his emotional mind, but seemed to play both sides upon doing so.
“I am not necessarily mad at the replacement officials. I am more upset with the NFL for not handling this and taking care of this in due time I guess. I think the replacement officials are doing their best in a very sticky situation for them and you got to go out and play the game. The regular guys, when they get back, they are going to miss some calls too. They didn’t ask to be thrown into that predicament,” Tuck said. “It is a tough job. Even the regular guys miss calls."
Antrel Rolle spoke in the same sentiment as Tuck’s latter comments about overcoming whatever is in their way since there is nothing that they, as players, can do about it. He’s right, but that doesn’t necessarily mean remaining quiet about the continuing standoff between the NFL and the NFLRA.
This past week, during Monday Night Football, there were many times that there was a lax in actual football snaps/play and an increase in nonsensical football banter – until announcer Mike Tirico made sense (yes, dazzling sense).
“It’s been said a lot these guys are doing the best they can. Remember they’re all rookies when it comes to the NFL—and they’re not the best rookies available because those are the guys who work in the SEC or the Big 10 or the Big 12. It’s like taking a 6th round group of draft picks, making them a team and saying ‘go play against the best in the NFL who have been out there along time.’ And what players have been doing after week one, they’ve figured out what the parameters are with the substitute teachers and now they’re taking advantage of them wherever they can.”
A surprising bash came from a former NFL official this past week. Previous referee Jerry Markbreit (retired ’93) condemned the league during an appearance on ESPN's "The Mike Lupica Show." In it, he basically slammed NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell.
"It's obvious to me that (Goodell) just doesn't even care," said Markbreit, who refereed for 23 NFL seasons. "Otherwise, how could they replace professionalism with unprofessionalism in a game that's so tough to work, even for the best officials in the land? The management of the games gets tougher (in the coming weeks)…These guys have relied on competent, top-notch, terrific officials all these years. And now they have a bunch of amateurs out there and it's going to fall apart. It's not going to get better, as the commissioner said… It's going to get worse…it's absolutely true…They just don't care about the inadequacy and unprofessionalism of these scab referees who are trying to do something that they don't have the ability to do … It just makes me sick to my stomach."
Well now, add this to the facts that one official was already removed for pretty much being a bragging New Orleans Saints fan and another recently passed comments (mid-game) to Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy “that he needed him for his fantasy football team.”
We haven’t even pulled any documented facts/footage from the arsenal, but agree on the unprofessional and amateurish part. Enough is enough—it’s like having bandwagon and fantasy fans (that lack consistency and can easily be coerced) officiate out there. Flag, please.
