New York Giants Have Either $7.2 or $3.6 Million in Cap Space, Depending Who You Ask

New York Giants Chris Snee restructured his contract to give the team an extra $3 million or so in cap space this year, and the full picture of the Giants cap situation is coming into view as the season kicks off in just a few hours: according to a Monday report by Profootballtalk.com, the NFLPA said the Giants have $3.6 million, while the official numbers from NFL headquarters (also courtesy of PFT) indicate Big Blue has a full $7.2 million in breathing room.

While PFT's Mike Florio points out big discrepancies between the NFL and NFLPA's numbers, we wonder if both numbers were correct when reported and the difference can be mostly attributed to Snee's restructuring (but again, we're really not sure).

It's not surprising to see the Giants give themselves a nice cushion despite Jerry Reese's teams generally playing things pretty close to the cap. They'll need a little breathing room in case of in-season moves and it never hurts to have some cap space on hand if you want to hand an extension to a player mid-season.

Thought we were over the cap by 700k?

Over the year I think the hardest job of Fewell is to get the 2nd team LBs the snaps they deserve, especially Rivers and Williams. Herzlich is more just the backup to Blackburn on 1st and 2nd downs. But Rivers and Williams (since he put on weight) can both play multiple positions on early downs and in passing situations.

  3. Another thing to remember about cap numbers: there’s some rule about only the top 51 players continuing or something (Florio mentions it in the first linked post from Monday) and yadda yadda yadda.

The salary cap is a complicated thing. As are the effect on the cap of salaries and bonuses in players’ contracts. My point is, we’ve long given up trying to figure it out. We just wait for updates and, well, the NFL’s number seems as close to a good answer as we’ll ever get, right?

If you have more than a mil or so in cap space after you’ve settled your roster then you’ve screwed up.

    • Well then all 32 teams in the league have screwed up. Not a single team, according to the NFL, has less than 2.3 million in cap space.

        Then let me explain …

Cap money doesn’t carry over … so what you don’t spend this year is simply lost … as in lost opportunity.

If you have say $5,000,000 leftover after the 53 cutdown then if you renegotiate someone’s deal to pay them this $5,000,000 now instead of next year … then next year you have $5,000,000 more with which to sign guys like Nicks, Cruz, Phillips etc etc.

So yeah, if you’re a GM and this happens then you f’ckd up and disadvantaged your team.

Just hired this smokin hot 18 year old girl the other day. She comes in for her first day of work today, sees my Giants lanyard and says “omg I love the Giants! I have Giants bra and panties on for the game tonight!”

  6. kujo says:

LOL! This broad knows her sh-t! We are talking Giants football and she’s like “I dunno, I think our offensive line is sh-t!”

Suddenly Demo calling us offensive line pessimists “ankle grabbers” sounds sorta hot!

I have no idea how I’m going to make it through the next 4 hours without losing my freakin’ mind.

  8. I’ve done everything I could think of to do today: I went glass shopping, cleaned the whole apartment, did the dishes, took a walk, hung out on the corner with my buddies.

And here I am, in a clean apartment, with nothing to do. And kickoff is four hours away.

    Norm, I feels ya…
