Saturday was a rough day for offensive lineman Mitch Petrus. After surviving finals cuts and beginning to prepare for the Dallas Cowboys, the 2010 fifth-round draft pick was informed the team would be going in a different direction, claiming tackle D.J. Jones off of waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles, and that it was time he packed his bags.
"I'm so thankful for the opportunity that the New York Giants gave me these past 2 years. Its been incredible to be a Super Bowl champion!" Petrus tweeted. "I'm looking forward to the next opportunity given to me. Thank you to the fans for all of the support."
Jones, who had just been waived by the Eagles after playing in their final preseason game, failed his physical for undisclosed reasons, leaving the Giants with only 52 men on their roster. Accordingly, they hit Petrus' number on speed dial and had him re-direct right back to the TIMEX Performance Center, where he arrived following practice on Sunday afternoon.
That awkward moment when you've just been fired in place of a guy with zero NFL starts, and then are asked to return when he fails his physical…
The Giants now have two reserve interior offensive linemen heading into Wednesday's season opener with the Dallas Cowboys; Petrus and Jim Cordle.
