After a long offseason of speculation, the New York Giants have finally announced the 53-man roster. Headlining the news is the placement of both CB Terrell Thomas (knee) and DT Shaun Rogers (blood clot) on season ending IR. Furthermore, Adelwale Ojomo was the only undrafted rookie free agent to make the team.

However, it's important to note that this may not be the actual team that suits up this upcoming Wednesday. With the sudden influx of unproven talent on the free agent market, general manager Jerry Reese will surely be searching for guys to help solidify the potential weak spots on the roster. However, without further adieu, here is the Giants 53-man roster as it currently stands.

Under the new IR rule, the IR’d player is eligible to return after week 8. This is significant as players are ineligible for the Practice Squad if they’ve accrued a full season, which per the NFL means you’ve played at least 9 games in 1 season. IE – after week 8, they reclaim their IR’d player, they can still move one of their 1st year players to the PS at that point as they would not have accrued a season.
Considering how bad Petrus has looked this preseason, one wonders if Cordle (who can also play guard) would be the first option off the bench if either Snee or Boothe can’t go.
It will also be interesting to see how things play out once Canty returns from PUP in Week 6. Seems to me they have three possible options:
1) Try and sneak Kuhn on to the practice squad (he should still be eligible at that point) This would be the preferred option if he shows himself not quite ready for prime time during the first six weeks.
2) Release Bernard. Even if his play his is nothing more than meh, his release is extremely unlikely as his salary will be guaranteed on account of being on the opening day roster.
3) Release (or PS) Tracy or Ojomo. One of those guys is hardly going to dress this year (most likely Ojomo) All the buzz over his preseason play will have certainly died down by Week 6, so maybe he can be slipped quietly on to the PS at that point.
Why would you not dress Ojomo? Once Tracy strains a metatarsal ligament in his foot reaching into his mailbox, we’ll need Ojomo in uniform. I would park Tracy in street clothes until he can prove he can’t injure himself receiving communion.
I’d rather have Kuhn than Bernard. Rocky showed his “white coat” syndrome this pre-season when the doctors were hovering over him, but let’s face it, he’s not built for a 16+ game schedule.
Once Canty returns from PUP (and from his MICRO-FRIGGIN-FRACTURE-KNEE-FREAKIN-SURGERY, I’m sure he won’t be getting more than 12 snaps a game. The team will need a young, strong body that can eat up some playing time. And I ain’t describing Canty, and I ain’t describing Rocky.
Ojomo likely does not dress because he’s a rookie UDFA who I think played 14 games total at Miami.
That he flashed in three preseason games against grocery baggers hardly assures me that he’s now ready to step in and be a regular rotation player. I doubt he’s in the team’s plans this year.
Kuhn likely dresses and gets some play in the rotation (cause he’s farther along than Austin). But he’s yet another preseason wonder who has yet to show a thing when the games start counting for real.
I get all the excitement over young, promising players. But let’s not fall all over ourselves anointing these guys before they’ve played a single snap in the regular season.
Good point, Norm. Hadn’t thought of that.
Thomas going on IR is a blow to the gut.
Really, really unfortunate.
But hardly unexpected.
I don’t see a whole lot of movement here in the next few days. We know a veteran OL is probably on the way and that’s bad news for Cordle or Petrus obviously. Maybe a veteran CB bumps Stevie Brown off, but I don’t see where else you could reasonably expect to find an upgrade…
As I said earlier, Cordle is not going anywhere. His ability to play center and his knowledge of the Giants playbook makes him too valuable to the team, irregardless of how talented he may or may not be.
But Petrus’ grasp on a roster spot remains tenuous, at best. He’ll be the first one out the door if another interior lineman is brought in.
I could also see them placing Austin on the new IR on Monday and resigning Marcus Thomas.
Ohm tweeted tonight something to the effect that the consensus is that Austin is expected back real soon, and thus no need for the IR exception.
Nice call.
Who will explain the concept of “bad” to Petrus?
I’m pumped up for Hosley. He is the perfect compliment to Webster. Teams will try to pick on him but he will make them pay. His ability to break on the ball is unbelievable.
Prince isn’t getting that job back.
I think Hosley will play in the slot; Prince lines up outside.
Hope Prince can make it out of the tub in time.
OK, let me see if I have this straight…
Prince is a china doll because he loses time after a Bear lineman rolls up on his ankle.
But when Hosley winds up in a walking boot after injuring himself while hot dogging his way into the end zone, it means he’s got “swag.”
Yup; makes perfect sense to me.
This is as strong a defensive roster this team has had in quite some time.
Even with Thomas gone, The linebacker position has finally been upgraded.
There is speed enough to cover the middle of the field. And with any luck, the safeties can play to their strengths.
Defensive tackle is anchored by a soon to be (IMHO) star DT in Joseph.
Both Tracy and Ojo are gifted players. Add Hill and Coe to that list as well.
On offense, every position is solid. The offensive line is the only area of concern. I really hope the Giants spend picks 2 and 4 on offensive line talent.
The one thing that we all seem to miss about this unit is the effort they expend.
They find a way to get it done. Character kicks in when talent is meh.
Beatty having back problems is not something to bank on long term.
That simply wont get better playing football. And DD is one day going to go tilt.
Otherwise, this is as good a skill position roster as you will find in the game.
And hell yeah, Brown is a genuine upgrade over Ware.
God willing, this is a 10/11 win team no matter what the schedule is.
That is strictly IMHO. But I feel strongly about it.
WARNING: Both Wilson and Hosley have the look of game changers.
The special teams are actually look special. Thank God for Izzo.
And I will say it again, IF the run blocking can manage a push, this ball club can not be dealt with by ANY defense. And once again in the middle of the SECOND age of the forward pass in pro football, the Giants will win yet another Super Bowl because they are able to run the football as well as pass it.
I’m really excited about this roster. I like that we kept young talent over vets. While I was surprised about Ware and Thomas I think if a conservative people like TC/JR made the moves it was with good reason.
Ojomo is basically around to redshirt this year if everyone is healthy. Tracy based on special teams is the easy choice to be active on game days.
I think Benard is in trouble when Canty returns from PUP. His guaranteed contract is a sunk cost so that has no factor in the decision. Im guessing that by giving Canty this extra time he will be 100% and ready to roll from the start. That means the question is do we trust Austin/Kuhn in the 3rd DT role. So far Kuhn has been better than advertised and carrying 4 DTs with Austin in question for game one says a lot.
Tomorrow is a big day for our Dallas prep. If Beatty and Hosley practice that’s a big step towards playing wed. If they dont it makes them playing unlikely.
I think Petrus and Steve Brown should be worried about their spots. We can definitely find upgrades their. Cordle is probably safe since Boothe is the LG and the only other center option that knows the offense.
+1
I think this might be the most talented roster the Giants have had going into a season in a while. There are very few, minor holes. Backup TE and interior OL is kinda thin, but if that’s your biggest problem heading into an NFL season, well, that ain’t bad.
I think this is our most talented roster in 2 decades. I thought the same about 2010. But the speed we have at all positions makes this by far the fastest Giant’s team I can remember. I think we are fine at backup TE because I see Robinison contributing this year.
Backup interior OL is by far the biggest hole.
Our second two of our most important players at least for the first part of the year are Joseph and Webster. Both players are near pro bowl quality with serious questions behind and around them.
Norm– I don’t remember seeing any Bears O-Linemen anywhere near Prince. If I recall correctly, he made a tackle in the open field. Didn’t even get it tangled up; just planted and pushed off the wrong way.
turkish –Hosley would have to be pretty outstanding to take Prince’s job, but it doesn’t matter much…they’re both going to play a ton when healthy anyway.
Prince was actually hurt on the play BEFORE he made the tackle on Marshall. It was the end around play to Hester, I believe, in which Prince had his ankle rolled up on.
That he was able to come on to the field and make a perfect form tackle on the always tough to bring down Brandon Marshall one play after incurring a high ankle sprain certainly flies in the face of the narrative that he is a soft poo-say.
