The New York Giants were hoping to have defensive tackle Chris Canty back for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, but that's not going to happen. The team has placed both he and tight end Travis Beckum on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, meaning they will each miss at least the first six weeks of the season. Neither will be eligible to come off of PUP until October 16th.
To clarify PUP rules (from Giants.com):
According to NFL rules, the earliest Canty and Beckum can be activated is the day after the sixth regular season weekend (October 16). From October 16 up until the day after the ninth regular season weekend (November 6), players on reserve/PUP may begin a 21-day practice period before a decision has to be made whether to activate, terminate, or keep them on the reserve/PUP list.
As recently as two weeks ago, Canty said a week one return was possible, but he had been unable to pass his physical following offseason knee surgery – a surgery that has been shrouded in secrecy. It is now obvious that the procedure was far more extensive than many were initially led to believe.
For Beckum, landing on PUP was far more obvious and expected. Despite high hopes this offseason, he is only six months removed from ACL reconstructive surgery. You might remember he tore said ACL in a Super Bowl XLVI victory over the New England Patriots.
In addition, the team placed offensive lineman Brandon Mosley, their 2012 fourth-round selection, on season-ending Injured Reserve (IR) with an ankle injury and terminated the contract of defensive back Antwaun Molden.
In an effort to get down to the mandatory 75-man roster, Big Blue also released the following players:
Tight end Ryan Purvis, defensive tackle Carlton Powell and defensive back Chris Horton. Also waived were wide receivers Julian Talley and Brandon Collins, tight end Christian Hopkins, defensive backs Brandon Bing and Jojo Nicolas, running back Joe Martinek, tackle Joel Reinders and defensive tackle Oren Wilson.
We will have more on these players later.
