After undergoing offseason knee surgery, New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty had been slow in his recovery. For that reason, it came as no real surprise to anyone when the team placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list on Monday. However, Canty did not share similar expectations, and was caught off guard when informed he would miss the first six weeks of the season.
"Well, it doesn’t matter how I feel about it," Canty said. "I was brought here to do a job and right now they don’t feel it’s in the best interests of the football team for me to be playing so that’s what it is."
Asked if he thinks Injured Reserve (IR) is an eventual possibility, Canty simply said "If you were to ask me would I start season on PUP, I’d say there’s no chance. But here I am."
The extent of Canty's knee injury remains a bit of a mystery. There's been no information on what was done, where it was done or even exactly when it was done. All anyone seems to know is that it was done and now he's on PUP.
Although he could not confirm the rumors, Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger tweeted earlier today that he had heard through the grapevine that Canty underwent the dreaded microfracture surgery. But again, that's merely speculation at this point and there's little evidence to support it … other than being placed on PUP, obviously.
Through it all, Canty insists he's feeling better now than he did during the Giants' stretch run a season ago.
"I stand by the position my knee is better than it was November, December, January of last season. But ultimately this was a decision that was made in the best interest of the football team," Canty said.
Despite resistance from #99, Big Blue opted to shut him down and there's no backsies in the game of football. Canty can't be activated until October 16th at the earliest.
