Joe Martinek, Julian Talley and Others Waived as New York Giants Trim Roster Down to 75

Cut down day is one of the worst days in professional football. It's a day in which the hopes and dreams of many are delayed, or in some cases, completely shattered. For 12 New York Giants, they were no exception, as the business side of the NFL cost them their jobs on Monday.

In an effort to trim their roster to 75 players, Big Blue placed defensive tackle Chris Canty and tight end Travis Beckum on PUP, while also ending the season of fourth-round selection Brandon Mosley, placing him on Injured Reserve (IR). In addition, the team terminated the contract of veteran defensive back Antwaun Molden.

From there, it was onto the cuts, including wide receiver Julian Talley out of the University of Massachusetts.

"Fall nine times. Get up 10," Talley tweeted. "Back to the drawing board wit it. Not the ending, just a new beginning."

Talley was joined by 10 other young players, including tight end Ryan Purvis, defensive tackle Carlton Powell and defensive back Chris Horton, wide receiver Brandon Collins, tight end Christian Hopkins, defensive backs Brandon Bing and Jojo Nicolas, running back Joe Martinek, tackle Joel Reinders and defensive tackle Oren Wilson.

As Pat Traina of Inside Football pointed out, these cuts leave the Giants without a single former Rutgers player on their team.

While this doesn't necessary mean these players won't end up on the practice squad, being a part of the first round of cuts certainly means it will be more of an uphill battle for them. The deadline for the second round of cuts, which will drop NFL teams down to 53-man rosters, is Friday, August 31st at 9:00 PM EST.

Is anyone honestly surprised by any of these?

    • Begiant says:

I thought Antwan Molden and Bing might have made it passed because of our lack of Corner depth right now…we must be confident in Prince and Hosely coming back from injury

    • GOAT56 says:

Martinek. I thought he would be given a lot of playing time Weds. Bing also because I though he would be given a chance to show what he could do. But he just might have been too injured to even play Wed.

Giant sign newly available free agent CB Kevin Barnes to 75 man roster

I think Barnes was just cut today…we must like this guy

Have to say that none of the cuts made me even lift an eyebrow. I thought when camp started that Horton might still have something to offer but once Brown played pretty well back there that was no longer the case. I thought then that Will Hill would make it, but I thought he’d barely do it as opposed to taking the #3 safety spot by storm. Brown has been the big surprise for me. I think he may be the #4 safety who would keep them from bringing Grant back for another run.

As long as Kuhn and Ojomo are safe
Wednesday we are likely to see a D-Line of Broha, Kuhn, Hendricks and Ojomo
With an LB corps of Paysinger Jones and Massau behind
    The new look Giants

    • fanfor55years says:

Not sure I’d play Muasau much if I were them. He’s going to the practice squad and there’s no reason to give anyone film on him.

  5. Luv2Salsa says:

Expect a large dose of Johnson and Scott against the Pats. These are the last CB’s standing along with Coe and Tryon who I’m sure they’d want to rest.

    Any info on Mosely’s “injury?”

    • Luv2Salsa says:

CWeb is also among the upright, but don’t expect to see him before Dallas.

I thought I read out of boot and running but not practicing
        So looks good
Prince also looks on track to be available week 1
Canty is the only real loss so far
But TT, Boley, Beaty, and Tracy are looming concerns

        Good to see Williams back
Rivers looks to be a solid addition
KP has looked great so far
Kiwi, Tuck and Osi, are Kiwi, Tuck and Osi
And JPP continues to reside on another planet

With Kuhn added to the DT rotation, I think LJ, bErnard and Thomas make a respectable group

So Beatty finishes practice with the first team doing 2 minute drills

  7. Krow says:

Mosley is one of those IR moves that the NFL tolerates, but secretly knows is BS. Every team does it. It’s a way of stashing ‘developmental’ prospects that need work. I suspect there’s some ‘wink and a nod’ limit … 2 or so … after that they have to really be hurt.

    • fanfor55years says:

It is definitely a questionable use of the IR, but it was a great thing to do IF they get away with it. Didn’t the league do some investigating of a similar decision we made sometime in the recent past?

I think Wednesday’s game is becoming HUGE for Capers, Cordle, Petrus and White.

    • James Stoll says:

The NFL really needs to go back to the old IR policy where a player only misses 6 weeks. More like baseball’s DL

Does anyone remember or know the origin of the change
It seems to be that if you can IR someone for 6 weeks and bring them back after it allows middle of the road injuries time to recover without facing the Hobson’s choice of IR’ing for the season or forcing them to return too soon

What is the Union’s position on this?

      • fanfor55years says:

They rejected it in the CBA negotiations. Seems crazy on their part because it costs their members’ jobs.

The fear is that teams will stow away players. Many owners prefer to see more options to sign out there instead of allowing the better teams to protect their assets. And the union wants the players to avoid being put on ice for a year when they don’t need to be and therefore get a chance to show their wares and get larger contracts.

But there should be a modification. Even better for fans would be an expansion of the rosters by two spots. The we almost certainly would not have to choose between Ojomo and Tracy, which is a bad thing for the team and the fans (but good for teams just salivating at the chance to sign our defensive end rejects).

        • Emperor Norton says:

They rejected it because the league wanted concessions about practices during the preseason and regular season. On net, it would helped a few guys get back on the field for week 9, at the expense of a huge uptick in injuries. I don’t blame them for it, and am completely unsurprised that you have to dig through the press releases to find anything other than “The player’s union rejected this common-sense provision, those evil bastards!”

    • jfunk says:

I suspect there is some wiggle room in the rule because it’s kind of always been more about a guy being hurt “too long to hold a roster spot” more than it has been “no way he can return this year”.

Some teams even lament about their superstars that go on relatively early when they are suddenly approaching an unexpected playoff push at the end.

Because that kind of interpretation has always been allowed, the NFL probably has a hard time going after teams that do this right now during roster cuts. The team can just say “hey, we know he’s not out for six months, but he’s out for too long for us to carry him on the roster right now”.

  8. Luv2Salsa says:

Any votes out there for dumping Tracy and keeping Ojomo?

    • James Stoll says:

      I like them both
      Can wedump Rocky instead?
After all, the ultimate goal is to field 11 DE’s at least once during a game

      • G-MenFan says:

I hate having to pick between them. Tracy is still PS-eligible, but I don’t know if he’ll clear waivers. There are about 10 teams in the league whose pass rush would improve immediately if they signed him.

        • fanfor55years says:

If we try to send EITHER of Tracy or Ojomo to the practice squad he will not get there. Pro personnel people around the league are just waiting to pounce on defensive ends who we leave exposed to poaching.

Coughlin says Prince is “hobbling around without the boot today.” progress

    @RVacchianoNYDN
DE Justin Tuck (shoulder) and DE Jason Pierre-Paul (back) are at the Hospital for Special Surgery for tests.

    @NotoriousOHM
Justin Tuck went to Hospital for Special Surgery to have shoulder checked. Coughlin made it sound as if this was scheduled
