It's been widely speculated that former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan would eventually take over as co-host of "Live!" alongside Kelly Ripa following Regis Philbin's retirement in 2011. He has made several guest appearances on the show, and was recently deemed one of three finalists, along with Josh Groban and Seth Meyers.

On Tuesday, word leaked that Strahan would, in fact, be given the permanent position on the New York-based morning show.

"ABC is expected to announce in early September that Michael Strahan will take over as the cohost of Live! alongside Kelly Ripa, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation," Broadcasting and Cable reported.

In addition to his now permanent spot on Live!, Strahan will continue in his role with Fox NFL Sunday which is filmed in Los Angeles.

No stranger to being on camera, Strahan has also made several appearances on The Best Damn Sports Show Period, Rome is Burning, Pros vs. Joes, Chuck and even had his own sitcom, Brothers, which aired 13 episodes on FOX in 2009.

    Michael and Kelley
    a show I’ll never watch

Jim – it’s going to be hard for Kuhn to make the 53. The injuries to Canty and Austin really hurt him becasue assuming we keep 5 DTs we need 3 DTs that can play a lot of snaps at this level. I don’t think he’s ready for that. If we know Canty is able to play week one then that helps his chances. Remember our 2nd round pick Joseph wasn’t ready as a rookie, we were just able to redshirt him because the vets in front of him stayed healthy. He is 26 so his upside is anywhere near that of Joseph. While he has the upside to be a good player he’s worth the risk of stashing him on the PS because similar to someone like Ballard, his talent is fairly easy to replace.

It’s looks like our young buck DEs Ojomo, Marshall and Brotha will wage a 3 way battle for a PS spot. Given that we only we keep 4 DEs we need to carry a DE on PS. Trattou is on IR now so that opens up the spot. Plus with JPP being out 2 of the 3 will be second string and and might even mix in with the first team to given Osi and Tuck blows. This is a golden opportunity for all 3 to show they can perform against real NFLers. I favor Ojomo because he looks to have the most athletic upside but Marshall was PS last year and Brotha just seems to make plays.

Yeah, I think it’s pretty much Canty, Lindval, Austin, Rocky, and Thomas for the roster right now. One more can sneak on if Canty stays on the PUP.

I think something drastic would have to happen for Kuhn or Hendricks to knock one of those guys out.

I don’t know, when Coughlin starts publicly praising a youngster, you begin to think he’s got a serious shot
2 sacks and 3 taCKLES, 1 FOR A LOSS, AGAINST THE bEARS MAY BE TOO MUCH TO IGNORE

  3. GOAT56 says:

Congrats to Strahan. I to will rarely watch it but because of him will probably tune in once in a while. For now he’s still doing the Fox sunday show as well.

    Fun with anagrams:

    Markus Kuhn = K-Man Krush U!

  5. JimStoll says:

Marcus Kuhn: “Ich werde diese Football Team”

  6. norm says:

I think you may be on to something, Jim.

I’ve no doubt that the discipline loving, militarily-strict Coughlin absolutely loves the idea of a German on the team.

That boy, Markus, he’ll make the trains run – er – get the players to meetings on time!

  7. norm says:

    You have been warned…

I’m an old Jew with a seemingly endless store of German jokes.

This could be a long season for y’all here if Kuhn makes the roster.

  8. fanfor55years says:

    Good for Strahan.

Here’s an update on the situation at defensive tackle that I got this AM. There are people in the front office who are adamant that if Kuhn is put on waivers he will never make it to the practice squad because at least two teams would like to claim him. This MAY change the approach to the 53-man roster, but may not. The coaches definitely like Thomas because of his experience.

I’m guessing that the eight offensive linemen dressed for the Dallas game will be Locklear, Boothe, Baas, Snee, Diehl, Brewer, Petrus and Capers. Am I missing someone?

    • JimStoll says:

in all seriousness, when coughlin goes out of his way to praise a young player, you have to wonder
if they can’t IR him, will they keep aging vets like Rogers or Bernard when they still have a young emerging stud in LJ and another stud in the prime of his career as your 1 & 2
we all know that canty’s 2012 campaign is somewhat in question — does he start the season on the PUP? does he end up losing the entire year to IR? or is he back sometime between week 1 and 6?
as far as Kuhn is concerned, Canty to the PUP would be perfect – that would allow the G-Men to keep LJ, Bernard, Thomas, Austin and Kuhn, and when Canty is ready, the least productive of those 5 can be IR’d or released

      • jfunk says:

Yeah, it’s going to be tough. I want Kuhn as well, but Thomas seems like he’s too good to let go (he could very well turn out to have a future here…he got caught overvaluing himself but has shown he’s a capable player), and Bernard is the only guy with experience here that can start right now until Canty is healthy.

There’s simply no way that Austin gets cut…too young, too much upside, too recent of a big investment.

Good problems to have I guess.

      • GOAT56 says:

True. I don’t mind that solution. But I don’t know if the coaches are cool with Canty being out 2-4 games more than needed. The one issue is he can’t practice for those 6 weeks though he can work on the side like he has been.

    • GOAT56 says:

Hmmm. Interesting. That’s a tough spot with the DTs. Wonder is we consider keep 6 DTs to start the year. If we cut Kuhn later it would make it harder for teams to claim him.

So you think Capers over Mosley? Possble but I just don’t see us trying to put 2 OL draft picks on PS. Or are you saying we carry 10 OL?

      • fanfor55years says:

Mosley will be on the roster but won’t be dressing. At least that’s my guess.

        • fanfor55years says:

And Beatty’s injury does, I think, mean we have to carry 10 offensive linemen on the roster. That stinks, but I see little chance of anything else unless they really think Mosley is ready to play in an emergency and substitute him for Capers on my list. I seriously doubt they’ll do that.

  9. JimStoll says:

    4 RE,s, 6 DT’s, 7 LB’s, 8 DB’s/S’s — that’s 25 players
    6 WR’s, 9 O-L, 3 TE’s, 2 QB’s, 4 RB’s, 1 FB — 25 players

    Punter, Place-kicker, Long snapper — 3 players

    53

    • fanfor55years says:

See above for why I think they may have to carry 10 OLs so will have to eliminate one of the defensive tackles, linebackers, wide receivers or running backs. And that’s only if they go with 8 defensive backs, which is highly unlikely (with TT counted they really need 9-10).

It will be 5 defensive tackles for sure. The only question is where else a depth player will lose out. I think we may well go with only three running backs at the beginning of the season. We could drop Brown and Scott and no one will pick them up right away. So they’d be a phone call away.

  10. fanfor55years says:

Here’s the interesting thing about defensive tackles for the current Giants: they don’t have to be playmakers as much as they have to reliably stop the run and push the pocket back. With the guys we have at defensive end, and the use of NASCAR whenever possible, these defensive tackles don’t really need to get to the quarterback (when they do it’s a great bonus, but it isn’t a necessary part of the job description).

Linval Joseph excels in the things we need him to do. He’s strong against the run, he occupies blockers, he clears lanes for linebackers to breach, and he can shove his opponents back toward the quarterback because of his strength. He will rarely get a sack, but no one cares.

Chris Canty has a unique skill set in that he is excellent at occupying blockers, solid (though not as good as Joseph) at stuffing the run, and has the ability to get his arms and hands in passing lanes and knock down passes because of his height and instincts. He also has such long arms that he can keep offensive linemen from getting in tight on him and thereby making it much tougher to get leverage on him and push him out of the way to open a running lane.

Marvin Austin was drafted to provide the quickness that would allow us to get to the quarterback from the tackle position as well as the outside. We’ll see if that works when he finally gets on the field.

Anyway, the whole point of this post is that of all the prospective tackles beyond the above three and Rocky Bernard (reliable, knows the defense, solid against the run but also has a few moves that gets him to the quarterback on occasion….he is a lesser version of Joseph but makes up for it with savvy built from experience), it seems like Markus Kuhn would be the one who best fits the needs. The guy is spooky-strong, has a non-stop motor, and seems smart enough to pick up reads and how to gain leverage relatively quickly (with help from the coaches and the veterans around him). He reminds me a lot of Jim Burt, and not because they are both white. Burt was a guy who was so solid against the run and also made a living pushing the pocket back just enough that QBs could not step up and avoid the ferocious outside rush that was coming from both sides of the defense. He was so strong. It just strikes me that if Joseph and Kuhn were standing together in the middle of the defense it would give us as much pure strength in the middle as any team could have. More likely, when everyone is healthy, they’d have Canty paired with Kuhn (veteran and a rookie) and Joseph paired with Austin (veteran and a “rookie”), but in any case, they’d have a set of tackles who do exactly what Fewell needs them to do: allow that outside rush to kill the quarterback and prevent teams from running consistently and thereby slightly delaying that rush.

Can Thomas serve the same purpose and do it better? Maybe. But I’d like to see how the two of them do on Friday night against a pretty decent team (some have the Bears going to the Super Bowl) before committing to one or the other, and I suspect that the Giants may now be thinking the same thing.

    • BillyS says:

The Jim Burt reference is interesting. Kuhn has like 30-35 lbs on him though, I believe. But Kuhn really has a great motor. Burt had a few years where he was able to get a ton of pressure and I’d love if Kuhn developed into that. Go watch highlights of Kuhn and it’s easy to see that he gives 100% effort all the time. Even if he’s nowhere near the ball he’s hustling to get there. I just love when players don’t give up because every now and then that hustle works in the player’s favor. To me, and again I’m not sure why this is the first name that comes to mind, but Kuhn reminds me of Jonathan Babineaux of the Falcons. He’s always been a greatly under appreciated DT, but the guy is all hustle and manages to make plays. I don’t believe Kuhn will make it to the PS so I’m all for giving him a chance. He’s earned it.
