New York Giants cornerback Jayron Hosley was seen wearing a walking boot during practice as a result of a turf toe injury he suffered during the last game against the New York Jets. Hosley is expected to miss the next game against the Chicago Bears, but he is hoping to return for the final preseason game.
Hosley had a solid performance last week, including the play of the game in which he picked off a Mark Sanchez pass, returning it for a touchdown. Although not typically considered serious, turf toe tends to be a nagging injury that can stick with a player for a whole season. Hosley expects to be back sooner rather than later.
"Hoping early next week. That is what we are shooting for, that is what I am working towards.Trying to work the soreness and stiffness out. It’s been going pretty good," Hosley said. "It is different. It is such a small thing that can cause a lot of problems but got to take it day by day to get it right."
Coach Tom Coughlin wants to see more from Hosley after impressing in his last game, and hopes to get him back on the field soon. He also wants to see Hosley more in the nickel back role. Jayron believed his game improved from the first week, especially in his technique.
"Definitely saw some improvement from last week," Hosley said. "My alignment and assignments and technique got better overall. Making that [77-yard interception touchdown return] play kind of made things a little better. Not too many plays [on the field] but I made it count when I got a chance."
The Giants need Hosley to get all the game experience he can, especially with the question marks surrounding Terrell Thomas' recovery.

While it would be more comforting for Hosley to ahow he’s healthy by playing next week I think he should start week one as slot CB regardless. To Me Hosley showed some skills that Rolle just doesn’t have and i dont think his possible mistakes are as bad as Rolle’s limitations. Plus we play only 5 days after the last preseason game so recovery time is limited. Really we might know coaches thoughts on our DTs based on how how many snaps they play next wk. i think most starters will barely play if at all. The guys that will be cut will play the most.
I’m all for letting him rest at this point. I agree it’d be more reassuring if he were healthy and could play, but I’d rather take it easy on him. If TT were healthy then Hosley would be more in a “prove it” type of position right now, but since he’s a lock to make the team…and actually has a chance to be a starter while TT is on the mend…then there’s no point in risking him aggravating his toe/foot. I also agree that Rolle is very limited in what he brings to the table in that position. Don’t get me wrong, he’s terrific when it comes to emergency depth, but I’d rather let him stick at the position he’s clearly better at.
Eli’s going to be Fracesca’s weekly guest this year
Well, forget about Kuhn and Hendricks making it to the roster. My source tells me Coughlin is very high on Thomas and wants Rocky around this season. So it’s going to be Joseph, Canty, Austin, Bernard and Thomas, unless something bizarre happens this week or they decide they need to carry an extra defensive tackle into Week 1 in order to keep Tuck away from inside duty except in the NASCAR package.
Frankly, after digesting this I think it’s the smart solution. Austin will be back at some point, and when he’s ready they can decide if they need to cut either Bernard or Thomas. Bernard is a very reliable player for them and should be paired with Joseph as the starter and can help Thomas move up the learning curve. Thomas is no bum. He simply fell victim to the sin of overvaluing himself and thinking he should get a rich multi-year deal from someone because he had been productive in Denver and also because he isn’t the most mature person on Earth (but has to be very grateful now for the Giants having delivered him from Purgatory and given him a chance to play well and stay in the league for a few more years). Canty really should be back within a month unless that “procedure” was micro-fracture, which is unlikely because if it were I think the Giants would have made more moves in the off-season to improve at the position.
I still don’t want to lose Kuhn, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed while being happy that we will trot good, experienced, defensive tackles out there all season.
I can see why they’d want to keep Thomas since he’s still actually pretty young and hasn’t really hit his prime yet. He has room to grow. He’s already a solid run stuffer, but if he can get to the QB then it would make him all the more valuable. I absolutely hate the chance of losing Kuhn. I hopped on the Hendricks bandwagon — the guy is such a hard worker, but I’ve got a man crush on Kuhn. There’s just something about him where I think he has the chance to be a very solid overall DT in the league. Something about him reminds me of Jonathan Babineaux of the Falcons.
After thinking about it and debating back forth the past few days I agree. I think that’s the 5 DT’s that will make the roster and while Thomas could get cut I expect it to be Benard. Who while reliable and needed early wasnt the first vet we went to thi offseason so we are looking to upgrade. The point that really shifted my thinking is that Thomas, Kuhn and Hendricks are the same age. So if its given Thomas is better how much upside if any are we losing? I think its a fair chance we can stash Kuhn on the PS and its worth the risk. Looking back Joseph’s development it seems unreasonable to expect anything from Kuhn this year. Hendricks has had longer to develop and he could be ready to contribute but both him and Thomas have to outplay Benard for him to make the roster or Thomas has to flop.
A lot of people don’t realize that Thomas is pretty young and the main reason he was a free agent is because he priced himself out of the Broncos’ plans. If he had lowered his demands earlier he most likely would have been one of the top DTs on the market — especially for teams that needed help against the run. He doesn’t seem to offer too much in terms of against the pass, but I do like how he’s such a wide body that he can plug up holes. The thought of him and Joseph together is absolutely salivating, assuming he produces the way he’s done throughout his career.
Any idea why JPP won’t be playing on Friday?
Back spasms. Shouldn’t be a big deal. Pretty common from time-to-time for the guys who play in the trenches.
I think it’s something to do with a bad back. I just hope this isn’t the year of the bum backs…
Trat to IR. He got a bad haircut and it made him morose, so they had no choice but to IR him.
