Tom Coughlin Has “No Illusion” That New York Giants Need Improvement from Top to Bottom

There were many positives to be taken away from Friday's 32-31 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but make no mistake about it, head coach Tom Coughlin believes the New York Giants have quite a bit of room for improvement. And during a Saturday afternoon conference call, he made sure to point out that it's not just the third team and other reserves that need to play better, but the starters as well.

“We have no illusion about the improvement that needs to be made. I'm talking from the top of our team to the bottom,” Coughlin said. “Pass protection, once we got into the depth of our team, wasn't very good. There are things back and forth; I didn't like our time of possession being only at about 26 minutes, which bothers me as well.”

Coughlin specifically pointed out Prince Amukamara for having a sub par game, but did credit the cornerback for coming back mentally and forcing a fumble after being beaten twice on the previous drive. He also expressed disappointment in his defense for allowing two 80+ yard touchdown drives, as well as the two muffed punts – one by Jayron Hosley and the other by Jerrel Jernigan.

Not everything was focused on the negative, however. Coughlin praised a few of his linebackers -Mathias Kiwanuka, Keith Rivers and Mark Herzlich- whom he thought had superb games, and rookie running back David Wilson who flashed some serious speed in the open field.

“He showed us some things we can depend on going forward,” Coughlin said of Wilson, calling him "a plus."

In closing, the coach added that Domenik Hixon could have played if it were a meaningful game, but was held out for precautionary reasons. Meanwhile, wide receiver David Douglas missed the game because of a sore quad.

The New York Giants resume training camp practice this afternoon at 1:00 PM EST and break camp this coming Wednesday.

Perhaps Douglas’s quad will heal this week and in the next preseason game against the Jets he will catch 3 TD passes and the comparisons will begin

I wasn’t able to watch the whole game–fiancĂ©e dragged me out after the 1st half–so I will have to rely on you guys to answer this question: how did the backup OL look? I’m talking Petrus, Brewer, Mosley, Cordle…guys who are looked upon fondly or optimistically on here, and whose names are thrown at me whenever I indict this coaching staff and front office for not making the correct amount of commitment to constructing an elite or even passable OL. From Coughlin’s comments, it doesn’t seem like he was particularly impressed with their first efforts. Is he off base or exaggerating any?

I thought the first unit was ok run blocking wise and very good in pass protection. I thought the backup unite did well run blocking but struggled a lot in pass protection. I will allow someone else with more expertise to breakdown the individual play on the OL.

If you walked down the street … and grabbed a bunch of guys at random … suited them up and sent them out on the field …

      That’s how they looked.

Im laughing because GOAT56 and Krow grabbed different ends of the elephant –

But not seriously this WAS the first preseason game even under the new practice rules etc . The first thing I liked was no major injuries
The second thing I liked was that the first string seemed to have the game under control and the scrubs made their mistakes and Coughlin can now work EVERYBODY much harder to eliminate problems before the season starts . I liked Wilson with his speed and I also like Ware who seemed to not be afraid to bang into things . I Liked that Bennett did well enough to see the future .Punts and kicks scared andexcited me . Some flashes of speed that th Giants havent had and I guarantee that the fumblitis willbe cured by TC this week in practice
I didnt like that p-ssing match that seemed to go on here through a couple of threads . No names mentioned but gentlemen to start that cr-p and its only preeason ? Anyway ,back to work

I recently purchased NFL preseason live at NFL.com for $19.99 (normally $29.99) and I love it! You can watch all preseason games or repeats of any game in HD on your PC or tablet as many times as you like. The picture is really good and it has a couple nice features as well. On either side of the play button is a 10 second button, which allows you to jump forward or back 10 seconds so you can quickly and easily watch a play over and over again, if you wish, with just a click of the mouse button. That way, you can key in on any player to see how they performed on each play. On the right side of the screen there are 3 buttons, games, stats and plays. The games button allows you access any preseason game. The stats button allows you to access the stats while still watching the game, and the play button, gives you access to every play broken down by quarters and drives. When you select a specific play, it takes you directly to that play, then you can use the 10 sec button to watch it over and over……helps if your interested in analysing different players. If you have a brutal work schedule like me, or you can’t get the game, or you just wish to watch it at your own convenience, you’ll love this! I just watched the Giants game again, and keyed in on certain players, got a really good look, and seen alot of things I missed.
For 20 bucks you can’t beat it….. I normally try to find a stream (first row sports or similar site), because I live in Baltimore and games are not usually televised. Now I can watch and re-watch over and over……. If you got 20 bucks to spare, go for it. Well worth the money! Note: if you link it to other people and they suscribe using your link, you earn $10 dollars off your next purchase for each person you get to sign up using your link. You can use it for next years preseason live or other NFL offers!

If your interested go here and check it out, its worth it. https://preseason.nfl.com/nflpl/secure/packages?icampaign=PSL_HP_hottopic&cvosrc=Homepage.PSL.hottopic&module=HP11_hot_topics

When I take a dump at work every day and get paid for it, I call that my $hit money. My wife has no say in what I do with my $hit money. So…..Just take an extra long dump at work, then use that #hit money to pay for it. Then she can’t say anything :-D

After watching the the starting OL several times, here are some of my opinions:

-Baas – played well, he was the one player that consistantly blocked well in both the run and passing game. IMO he had the best game of all the starting OL.

      - Locklear – held is ground pretty well in the passing game, for his first start at LT, However he didn’t get a lot of movement in the run game.

      - Bennet blocked well and had a nice game overall. If he can continue to block like he did, that’ll be a huge help for OL.

-The rest of the OL Snee, Boothe and Diehl where decent in pass blocking, but very average in the run.

The second and third string OL where ranging from very average to flat out bad.

Some players I expected to play well that failed:

      - Mitch Petrus – He has strength if he gets a hold of somebody, but that seems to be the problem with him. On some plays he totally whiffed on his block. He seems kind of stiff and not very agile. His ability to stay with a block, or even find the person he’s suppose to block, is the biggest question I have with him. He needs to get his act together, he’s been with the Giants long enough, he should know what to do. I have seen him play well at times but other times he’s lost or something…..

      - James Brewer – did not play well either. Some defenders ran around him with relative ease. He was suppose to have quick feet, he needs to get in position much quicker than he did in passing situations.

      The rookie tackles.

      - Brandon Mosley – got his A$$ handed to him for the most part. But in all fairness, He was on the field a lot and got ton of reps, plus its his first NFL game and he has a lot to learn, so I’ll give him a pass for now.

      - Matt McCants -didn’t play nearly as much as Mosley so he didn’t have as much opportunity to get his A$$ handed to him as Brandon did. However he looked bad as well.

On a final note, it was the first preseason game so I won’t read too much into it. but there is definately a lot of room for improvement on the OL.
