Poor Eli Manning: NFC Championship Edition

"Poor Eli Manning” is a compilation of quotes by both the media and fans about New York Giants quarterback and Super Bowl XLII MVP Eli Manning.

Despite his success, negativity and doubt have followed Peyton’s younger brother since the moment he was traded from the San Diego Chargers to the New York Giants on draft day of 2004. Regardless of what he does or how well he performs – even in a league that lives and dies by the motto, “What have you done for me lately?” – he is questioned and criticized.

In Sunday's 20-17 thriller over the San Francisco 49ers, Eli Manning took the beating of his career. He attempted 58 passes and was hit 12 times, sacked six times, but managed to pick himself up and lead his team to Super Bowl XLVI.

Statistically, Alex Smith had a better quarterback rating than him, so that alone was enough for the Eli-haters to come out in force. But, as usual, there were many, many other criticisms of Eli this week. And, as usual, a lot of it had to do with his look and body language.

Hey, when all else fails, haters need to hang onto something, right? Interestingly, some of these "haters" aren't just Twitter personalities looking for their 15 minutes. No, no. This week's Poor Eli Manning focuses directly on ESPN and their "analysts" from First Take (see video below).

Allen Barra, The Atlantic

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and Eli is beheld by the New York area sports media. They've always agreed to overrate him, somehow seeing in him a better quarterback than his numbers would merit."

Tom Curran, Comcast Sportsnet

"He went against an excellent defense last week in San Francisco. Is he the reason they won? No. It was Kyle Williams wherever he did."

Croix_Story_4, Twitter

"Why does Eli Manning look like a r*****d 15 year old."

AntStacks, Twitter

"You can't tell me Eli Manning don't have down syndrome."

So Eli Manning averaged 375.7 yards a game in his only 3 indoor games this year. Thus, 292.8 outdoors.

Give him 12 games inside like Matt Ryan, that projects out to 5,679 yards.

    Hello, Saint Breesus.

Oddly enough, Super Bowl XLVI is indoors and on turf. Convenient.

      • Heather Lefkovenjm0m says:

Nice find on those stats Dirt.

It just shows you everyone wants to gush over the numbers, but they never take into consideration where half their season is played.

      • jfunk says:

Indeed. Several of the Giants players said as much the other day too. Indoors, on turf? Advantage our pass rush and passing game.

I can hear Julian Edelman channeling his inner Carlos Rogers right now “I can’t cover no option route all day.”

Haters gonna hate – so let them… Eli is in the Superbowl for the second time! So what if he looks a bit like Timm-ay from So. Park. ?! Superbowl winner and MVP! i only get on him when he gets into that bad habit he has of throwing off his back foot and behind target… forget the QB rating Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t pretty in his Superbowl wins either… Let the playa play!

This is absolutely not safe for work or those of with you couth, taste, or class. For the rest of you degenerates, it’s hilarious.

I used to be tough on Eli in his struggling years. But when he starts showing he’s an elite QB, I have the balls to admit I was wrong. It makes me wish I wasn’t so hard on him before. But the people still looking for something to hate on (including Giants fans) need to get a life.

    • Chad EldredChad says:

I was VERY critical of Eli early on. He drove me insane with his awkwardness in the pocket and clumsiness with the football at times. At this point the clowns who cannot see the maturation process and evolution into a top tier quarterback are just embarrassing themselves with these comments. It’s truly humorous.

  5. Heather Lefkovenjm0m says:

Eli comes from a good family that happened to have money. He is a Southern boy with that annoying southern draw. He is as cool as ice water when the pressure is on and has the state of mind to call a time out after he has been pumbled to the ground.

We have all been tough on him at times. Usually out of fustration, but that man has gotten our team back to the Super Bowl and that is all that we should be caring about.

When Skip and whats their faces only have body language and facial expressions to knock on anymore then you know its the Dallas Homer in them or whom ever they root for coming out. Hate all you want while Eli busts his a$$ to get his team another ring and he gives Tom Brady directions to Jareds for his.

Don’t know if anyone saw this, but its kind of fitting for the Poor Eli article.

    Chim………………..

In the previous thread you asked about the live stream press conferences on Giants.com.

Not sure what time they start streaming, but I was watching it on Thursday at about 2:00 your time(if you’re in Eastern). I believe it said that they would be doing it every day. I watched Cruz and Manning, then had to leave for work.

  8. TuckThis says:

I’m sure Eli doesn’t care about the critics one iota. If they have criticism of his game fine, but his looks and mannerisms?……shame on you guys. I also find the use of retard and down syndrome as a pejorative beyond offensive.

  9. Jim StollJim Stoll says:

the haters are fewer and fewer
both Rodney Harrison and Brian billick just picked the Giants on the Boomer & Carton show
both did so because they cannot see how the Pats secondary stops Eli and the 3 WRs
Harrison went so far as to say, based on this year’s performance, he’d rather have Eli with 2 minutes to go and the game on the line than Brady
