The New Jersey Devils got the last, big piece of business done Monday, signing forward Adam Henrique to a reported six year contract worth $24 million.
Henrique had been rumored to be close to a new deal with the Devils for quite some time, but with the process of selling the team underway, the signing took a backseat. Agreement was finally reached Saturday.
“It was an exciting day,” Henrique told Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record. “My family and I are excited about it. It’s something you’ve been working for for a long time. I’m extremely happy with what the deal is and how things are looking going forward.”
With the unexpected departure of Ilya Kovalchuk, much will be expected of Henrique offensively this season. Last season, Henrique, still only 23, scored 11 goals and five assist in 42 games. As a rookie Henrique, scored 16 goals and 35 assists in 74 regular-season games. He added five goals and eight assists in 24 playoff games as the Devils reached the Stanley Cup Final.
“It was what the terms would be and what the length would be and what the right scenario would be as far his future, what the right contract length is with the collective bargaining agreement,” Devils President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello said. “All of those things had to be really fair for both sides and I think we came to the right decision.
“He wants to be here and he understood the thought process of what that means and what we think of him as a player and what he thinks of himself and what he thinks of himself, but also where he has to go,” Lamoriello said.
“Once everything was done there, that was just more security for the team,” Henrique told Gulitti. “I love being in New Jersey. I love playing there. The staff and the front office and everybody there has just treated me awesome and I knew it was a place I wanted to play for a number of years coming up.”
“He’s a core player,” Lamoriello said. “He’s an integral part of this team. He’s one of the key players that has to go (play well). He plays in all situations – 5-on-5, power play, penalty kill. So, he’s relied upon and he has that responsibility and has to produce.”
