The New England Patriots have had really bad luck in regards to injuries this season. They already have lost two key defensive players in NT Vince Wilfork and LB Jerod Mayo to season ending injuries. They also have been without CB Aqib Talib for the last two games. On offense,, the team played the first six games of the season without TE Rob Gronkowski and most of the season without WR Danny Amendola as well.
Unfortunately, the Patriots get to add one more player to the long list of injuries as it was announced on the Patriots website late today that OT Sebastian Vollmer would be placed on injured reserve, thus ending his season. Vollmer was injured Sunday against the Miami Dolphins and was down for a while as trainers attended to him. He was carted off with a big cast around his leg and he underwent surgery to repair the break earlier this week.
Vollmer signed a four year deal worth $27 million this offseason and will now likely be replaced by Marcus Cannon. Cannon has seen playing time throughout the season as he has stepped in a couple of times for injuries suffered during a number of games.
Field Yates of ESPNBoston.com reported what head coach Bill Belichick said about Cannon and his ability to replace Vollmer in the lineup.
He's an athletic guy who has good feet, can move people in the running game and has the quickness to block them in protection; good playing strength. He had an opportunity to play last week and stepped in, did a good job for us there in the second half against Miami. I'm sure he'll have a good attitude, good week of preparation this week against Pittsburgh and be ready to meet that challenge too. He's been a solid guy for us and it looks like he'll get an opportunity to play here in the near future.
With Vollmer on the IR, newly acquired DT Isaac Sopoaga replaces Vollmer's spot on the roster. Without putting Vollmer on IR, the Patriots would have been forced to release someone else.
