RB Shane Vereen seemed like a real bright spot for the New England Patriots in the 2013 season opener against the Buffalo Bills. Vereen was a threat in the running game as well as in catching passes out of the backfield after replacing Stevan Ridley who was benched for fumbling problems. However, he broke his wrist and was placed on injured reserve.
That news is likely a good sign for the Patriots, who used Vereen as an extra wide receiver in the slot even when Ridley was in the game. However, the day-to-day distinction was also applied to TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Danny Amendola when their status' were uncertain, so don't get too excited about Vereen returning to the playing field anytime soon.
Lastly, it should be interesting to see what the Patriots do with the large group of running backs they have when Vereen is able to return. Will they cut a hurt Leon Washington and let LeGarrette Blount return the ball on kickoffs again? Will Vereen take over Stevan Ridley's spot in the running game and Brandon Bolden's when the Patriots use a three wide receiver set?
Of course, those questions won't be answered for some time, but it will still be something to keep an eye on going forward.
