The New York Jets gave the New England Patriots their second loss of the season. After the Patriots forced overtime with a Stephen Gostkowski field goal with 19 seconds left in the game, the Patriots gave the New York Jets the win, ironically, off a special teams blunder.
Jets kicker Nick Folk missed a 56-yard field goal on the Jets first possession of overtime. However, Chris Jones was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for pushing a teammate forward in an attempt to block the kick. The ensuing play, Folk nailed a 42-yarder to give the Jets the win.
While the Patriots lost on one play, the game was filled with missed opportunities for the Patriots. Below are some of the key plays and themes from today's game.
-The much anticipated return of Rob Gronkowski was a success. He was thrown to 17 times and caught eight balls for 114 yards in his much anticipated return. However, he had the potential to have an even bigger day today, but he and Brady still seemed to need some work.
-Tom Brady is known for his accuracy on his deep ball, however, he has struggled this season. Chalk it up to losing his top five pass catchers from last season, meshing with the rookie wide receivers or injuries, Sunday was no different. Brady missed on quite a few deep balls to his receivers, as he just missed on the fingertips of his pass catchers,
-The offense and defense struggled on third down. For the game the offense was 1-12 on third down while the defense allowed the Jets to go 11-21. The defense was expected to struggle Sunday after losing Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo to season ending surgeries in consecutive weeks. The team was also without Aqib Talib Sunday as well.
-The Jets defensive line was also had a huge impact on the game. After now showing up in the first half, the defensive line forced a couple of Tom Brady fumbles and enough pressure for Brady to throw a key pick-six to get the Jets back into the ball game just after the second half started.
The Patriots will look to rebound next Sunday as they face the Miami Dolphins who are coming off a loss to the Buffalo Bills.
