Jerod Mayo has been one of the most important players on the New England Patriots defense and a tackling machine since he has entered the NFL. With the Patriots defense already losing nose tackle Vince Wilork to injury it put more pressure on the rest of the defense to produce.
It looks like the pressure will only continue to mount for the Patriots defense as Les Carpenter of Yahoo! sports reports that Mayo could miss the rest of the season due to the injury he suffered on Sunday.
Carpenter writes that Mayo underwent surgery on Tuesday for a torn pectoral muscle. While the hope is that Mayo can come back towards the end of the season, Carpenter points out that Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo missed the bulk of the last two seasons with a similar injury. Also the Chicago Bears D.J. Williams was ruled out for the rest of the year with a similar injury.
Mayo, who has 55 total tackles this season, is the team's leading tackler. Without him and Wilfork and maybe even Aqib Talib (hip flexor), a once strong defense now looks like it could be in major trouble.
Also something to note, is that the Patriots already used the lone IR/designated to return slot on running back Shane Vereen.
