The rumor mill just keeps churning out news pertaining to Rob Gronkowski and his return to the field for the 2013 season. According to WEEI.com, Gronkowski was not allowed to return earlier in the season because of serious concern over Tom Gill's surgery on his forearm.
As the report states, the Patriots anticipated that Gronkowski was going to return to the lineup for the team's Week 3 game over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, he was told not to because of concern over the forearm surgery done by team doctor Tom Gill.
Multiple sources told WEEI that the original injury to the forearm would have healed fine without surgery. However, the surgery was thought to accelerate the timeframe in which Gronkowski would be able to return to the field. He ended up returning against Houston in the divisional round of the playoffs but re-injured his forearm in the same game.
WEEI also reports in the article that the concern stems from the healing of the bone and the surrounding nerves around it since surgery. If the bone had healed on its own instead of with surgery, there would have been no infection and thus, no reoccurring surgeries.
With the information given to Gronkowski's family, they urged him to wait until it was fully healed. This then led to the team bringing in renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews to clear Gronkowski for a return.
