There is no doubt that Danny Amendola is a talented wide receiver, after all that is why the Patriots decided to sign him instead of Wes Welker. However, his talent was never able to totally surface on the field because he was always hurt. After sitting out of preseason due to an unknown injury, it was later disclosed that Amendola was battling a groin injury. Amendola ended up playing, and playing well. So well in fact, that he became the second Patriot ever to catch 10 passes and record 100 yards in their first ever game as a Patriot.
However, he did miss some action in the second quarter because of what appeared to be a reaggravation of that same groin injury. As the New England Patriots prepare for the New York Jets on a quick week for their matchup on Thursday, the team may be without their prized free agent receiver.
The Patriots may have a very tough time with the New York Jets this Thursday as Brady is going to be without his top two targets from Sunday's game, and may be without a third in tight end Zach Sudfeld, who pulled his hamstring in Sunday's game. The team got news yesterday that running back Shane Vereen would be out a couple of weeks due to a broken bone in his wrist.
To see how much Brady will miss both Amendola and Vereen in the passing game, ESPN Stats and Information showed this graphic: (the chart comes from the same article that is linked above)
Tom Brady by target, Week 1
*Four different receivers
Looking at that chart, Brady will likely be without two targets who caught 17 of his 29 completions from Sunday. For an offense without their top five pass catchers from last season, will not have to adjust once again and find new targets to throw to. Brady's stats were more than solid on Sunday, but you could tell that he still needed experience with the young wideouts as he had some miscommunications with them.
