The most noted move to come from today was the release of quarterback Tim Tebow. Tebow was signed by the Patriots right before the last week of the team's mini-camp. Despite finishing with a pretty strong outing in the Patriots fourth preseason game against the New York Giants, Tebow still had his struggles throughout the preseason. His performance all of preseason can be seen below, courtesy of Mike Rodak of ESPNBoston.com
Aug. 9 at Philadelphia: 4-for-12 passing, 55 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, 3 sacks; 4 rushing attempts for 31 yards.
Aug. 16 vs. Tampa Bay: 1-for-7 passing, -1 yards, no touchdowns, 1 interception, no sacks; 6 rushing attempts for 30 yards.
Aug. 22 at Detroit: Did not play.
Aug. 29 vs. New York Giants: 6-for-11 passing, 91 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, 4 sacks; 6 rushing attempts for 30 yards.
Tebow's roster status has been up in the air throughout the entire preseason as the Patriots haven't carried more than two quarterbacks for quite some time.
In other roster news, the Patriots also figure to keep Rob Gronkowski on the active 53-man roster while he continues to recover from forearm and back surgery. He will not be put on the PUP list which means that the Patriots will only have 52 roster spots while they wait for Gronkowski to recover.
Finally, the Patriots announced the release of punter Zoltan Mesko, defensive tackles George Winn and Macrus Fortson, defensive end Justin Francis, linebacker Ja'Gared Davis and cornerback Kanorris Davis.
According to ESPNBoston.com, Mesko released the following statement via his Facebook page:
“First and foremost, I want to thank the New England Patriots for everything they have done for me. I have nothing but love in my heart as I depart this great organization. Mr. [Robert] Kraft, the coaches, the strength staff, the trainers, the media personnel, the marketing department, the rest of the amazing staff members at Gillette, and especially my teammates…THANK YOU for all that you have given and have done for me. I want to say that I see the silver lining in things now more than ever, and am a true believer that things DO happen for a reason. This goes out to anyone that will ever come across a mere bump in the road; be thankful, be positive, because there’s a deeper purpose of WHY things happen that we may not yet, or may never come to understand. Just believe. I will miss New England, and more than anything, I’ll be missing the smiles on those kids whom I visited and acted like a goofball in front of. It was ALL worth it. God bless.”
The Patriots will announce more roster moves later on today as they still need to announce the release of six more players as their roster currently stands at 58 players.
