With the last week of NFL preseason games having ended, it now is time for all NFL teams to finalize their 53-man roster by Saturday as they prepare for the start of the NFL season. In trying to get closer to the 53-man roster number, the Patriots have announced that they will be releasing tights ends Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard.
According to ESPNBoston.com and rotoworld.com, the Patriots have informed Fells about his release from the team. Fells just signed a three-year, 5.25 million dollar deal last season and was set to make 1.25 million this season.
Meanwhile, according to rotoworld.com, Jake Ballard will also be released by the Patriots. Ballard was brought in last season from the New York Giants after he was claimed off waivers. He sat out all last season as he healed from a torn ACL that he suffered in the Super Bowl.
The release of the two tight ends indicates that Rob Gronkowski, who has been on the PUP list for the whole preseason as he recovers from back and forearm surgery, is very close to returning.
