As the Patriots continue to make roster moves in advance of the 53-man roster deadline set for Saturday, the team has announced the release of ten players. As previously reported, tight ends Jake Ballard and Daniels Fells were set to be released. Along with the official news that both those players are to be released, the Patriots have also released defensive end Marcus Bernard, wide receiver Johnathan Haggerty, linebacker Mike Rivera, first year offensive lineman Luke Patterson and four rookie free agents in fullback Ben Bartholomew, defensive lineman Gilbert Pena, offensive lineman Matt Stankiewitch and defensive lineman Scott Vallone.
Bernard, was signed as a free agent by the Patriots this offseason. He spent the last three years with the Cleveland Brown and played in 25 games where he registered 39 tackles for 11.5 sacks and two passes defended.
Haggerty, was signed shortly after training camp started. He went undrafted after the 2010 NFL Draft and was signed by the Cleveland Browns as a rookie free agent. He would spend the first season on injured reserve and then spent the 2011 season on the Chicago Bears practice squad.
Rivera made the team last season out of training camp and played in two games before the Patriots released him in the middle of September. He was then signed by Miami and then released and found his way back to the Patriots 53-man roster. Rivera was a 2009 NFL rookie free agent and was signed by the Chicago Bears. He spent time with the Bears, Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins before making the Patriots roster in 2012.
Patterson was also signed by the Patriots early into training camp. He spent time with the Kansas City practice squad for the past two seasons and was a defensive lineman during his career at Texas A&M.
Bartholomew was battling with James Develin for the lone fullback spot on the roster. However, the rookie free agent out of Tennessee couldn't beat out Develin for the spot. He played in 31 games and started 13 of those games.
Peña, was claimed off waivers just two days ago. The rookie free agent out of Mississippi, however, could not impress the Patriots enough to keep him. He was originally with the Green Bay Packers for the majority of training camp. He took four years off after high school and then went to ASA College in New York before getting a scholarship to the University of Mississippi for the last two years of his eligibility.
Stankiewitch was signed, released and then signed again by the Patriots this offseason. The offensive lineman was a two-year starter at center for Penn State.
Vallone, like Stankiewitch, was signed, released and then signed again by the Patriots. He was four-year starting defensive tackle for Rutgers.
