Tomorrow marks the deadline for all 32 NFL teams to get to the mandated 75-man roster limit before the NFL season starts. As such, the New England Patriots have announced a number of roster moves and have gotten to the required player limit one day in advance. The Patriots have released wide receiver Kamar Aiken, rookie cornerback Brandon Jones, veteran linebacker Niko Koutouvides, cornerback LeQuan Lewis and rookie long snapper Mike Zupancic.
The Patriots also placed rookie free agent defensive lineman Cory Grissom and offensive tackle Markus Zusevics on injured reserve. They also put defensive lineman Armond Armstead and rookie free agent wide receiver Mark Harrison on the reserve/non-football injury list.
Finally, the Patriots also re-signed rookie cornerback Stephon Morris and rookie defensive lineman Scott Vallone after releasing the two players earlier last week.
The 24-year-old Aiken came out of Central Florida in 2011 and spent time on the practice squad with the Buffalo Bills and then released in November. He also spent time on the Chicago practice squad before coming to New England.
Koutouvides has spent nine seasons in the NFL, the last two of which were with New England. He played 11 games for the Patriots, however, most of his playing time came on special teams. Koutouvides originally entered the league in 2004 draft after being selected in the fourth round by the Seattle Seahawks. He then spent time with the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after four season with the Seahawks.
The 23-year-old Jones started 12 games last season for Rutgers and had nine passes defended and a team-high five interceptions.
Lewis came into the league two years ago and played eight games for the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Signing as a rookie free agent with the Tennessee Titans out of Arizona State, Lewis was released by the Titans after training camp and did not find a job in the NFL until the following NFL season where he was with Oakland in the offseason before being signed by the New York Jets during training camp.
Zupancic was signed after the 2013 NFL Draft out of Eastern Michigan and was then released and signed again on August 5.
Morris started 24 games for Penn State while Vallone was a four-year starter for Rutgers and was a first team All-BIG East selection after his senior season.
