The New England Patriots have announced the additions of four players to their roster and the release of one more player as well. The news comes the day after cutting wide receivers Lavelle Hawkins and Perez Ashford, as well as, offensive lineman Nick McDonald

Today, the Patriots added DL Scott Vallone and Travis Chappelear, and wide receivers Johnathan Haggerty and Lavasier Tuinei.

Haggerty and Tuinei come onto the Patriots' roster in the most tightly contested position as the Patriots are hoping to find additional weapons for Tom Brady and the offense. The 25-year-old Haggerty has spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears. He was signed as a rookie free agent after the 2010 draft by the Browns, but got hurt and spent the season on Injured Reserve. Then he was released after the 2011 training camp with the Browns and spent his time with the Chicago Bears' practice squad. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Tuinei out of the University of Oregon, spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks practice squad.

In keeping with the theme of taking players from Rutgers University, the Patriots signed the 23-year-old Vallone. Vallone spent four years as the starting defensive tackle for Rutgers. Last season, he was named first-team All-Big East after recording 52 tackles and three sacks. Meanwhile, Chappelear, was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie free agent after this year's draft and was then released a couple weeks later. At Northwest Missouri State, Chappelear recorded 63 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two blocked kicks last season.

Finally, with all the additions, someone had to go to make room on the roster, and rookie free agent defensive back Stephon Morris was the odd man out. In 49 games with Penn State, he had 148 tackles, one interception and 13 passes defended.
