Brandon Lloyd is the newest addition the New England Patriots offense, but with the way things have been progressing during the opening days of training camp, you would never know it.
Lloyd and quarterback Tom Brady connected for a 45-yard touchdown pass in day 4 of training camp, absolutely torching safety Steve Gregory and cornerback Devin McCourty.
Lloyd caught another touchdown from Brady later on in practice, this time victimizing Kyle Arrington in the back of the end zone.
As much as Lloyd shined, tight end Rob Gronkowski disappointed. Gronk let a pass go through his hands that ended up intercepted by safety Patrick Chung. He also dropped a ball in the end zone during a goal-line drill. It is a safe bet he will not let such mistakes happen again, and Lloyd's chemistry with Brady will only make the other receivers and tight ends step up their game for the lion's share of targets.
The second day of full-pads practices for the Patriots has upped the ante on physicality. As a result, defensive end Rob Ninkovich, tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and offensive lineman Jamey Richards left practice early.
Ninkovich's absence allowed rookie Chandler Jones to participate in one-on-one drills and work with the starting defensive line. Jones managed a sack, but was also neutralized easily by Nate Solder on another play.
Fellow defensive rookie Alfonso Dennard sat out his second straight practice after injuring his hamstring on Friday. On a more positive note, Justin Francis, who was carted off the field on Saturday was back at practice Sunday. While many had feared a knee injury for Francis, sources later indicated cramps were the cause of the drama.
