Kevin Harvick took the pole for Sunday night's Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It's Harvick's 12th career pole. After sitting on the pole at Bristol Motor Speedway last weekend, it marks the first time that Harvick has sat on consecutive poles. It's Harvick's sixth pole of his 2014 season.Brad Keselowski will roll off from the second position with rookie Kyle Larson starting in the third position. Starting in the fourth spot is Ryan Newman with Matt Kenseth starting in the fifth spot. Martin Truex Jr starts in the sixth spot with Aric Almirola starting in the seventh spot. Starting eighth is Kyle Busch with Jeff Gordon starting in the ninth spot. Kasey Kahne will start in the tenth spot. Starting in the 11th position is Carl Edwards with Tony Stewart starting 12th. Stewart is running his first race since August 3rd after a sprint-car incident which killed fellow competitor Kevin Ward Jr.
Those 12 drivers advanced to the final round of the three round qualifying session at Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday night. Positions 13-24 were decided in the second round of qualifying.
Starting in the 13th spot is Austin Dillon with Joey Logano starting in the 14th position. Starting in the 15th spot is Jamie McMurray with Jimmie Johnson starting in the 16th spot. Denny Hamlin will start in the 17th position with Greg Biffle starting in the 18th spot. Brian Vickers will roll off from the 19th spot and Dale Earnhardt Jr will start 20th. Starting in the 21st spot is Clint Bowyer with Kurt Busch starting 22nd. A.J. Allmendinger will roll off from the 23rd spot with Casey Mears rounding out the top 24.
Those drivers advanced to the second round of the three round qualifying session at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Positions 25-43 were decided in the first round of the qualifying session.
Notable drivers in those positions include Ricky Stenhouse Jr in 26th, Danica Patrick in 27th and Ty Dillon in 29th. Dillon is driving the #33 Chevorlet this weekend and is making his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut. Marcos Ambrose is starting 32nd and Paul Menard will roll off from the 33rd spot.
There were 44 cars for 43 spots in the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway qualifying session meaning one car went home. The car coming into the race that was lowest in owner points was the #77 car driven by Joe Nemechek. Nemechek qualified his #77 Ford in the 32nd position, meaning he made the race on top 36 speed. The next team that was next in line in owner points was the #95 Levine Family Racing Ford and driver Michael McDowell. McDowell qualified 39th and he failed to make the 43 car field of Sunday's race.
