It was one of the worst kept secrets in the garage area and on Tuesday Joe Gibbs Racing made it official announcing that 35-year-old driver Carl Edwards will join the organization starting with the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.
Edwards, a native of Columbia, Missouri, has 23 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories throughout his ten year career. Edwards has spent his entire NASCAR career at Roush Fenway Racing and has accumulated 67 wins in NASCAR's three national series. Edwards joins a team that has his former Roush Fenway Racing teammate, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin.
"It's obviously a huge day for me," Edwards said. "It means the world to me to have this opportunity. It'll be nice to be able to talk about this now. To be honest, Matt's success over here — that was a big eye-opener for me," he added. "It just felt like it was time to change."
Edwards is referring to Kenseth's best career season which came at Joe Gibbs Racing in 2013, a year after Kenseth left Roush Fenway Racing. Kenseth rolled off a career high seven victories and finished runner-up in the point standings.
Edwards will drive a #19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing in the 2015 season with primary sponsorship coming from ARRIS Group Inc, a telecommunication company. ARRIS will sponsor the #19 Toyota in 17 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events. The rest of the 19 races sponsorship coverage has been sold but will be announced at a later time. Trevor Bayne will replace Edwards at Roush Fenway Racing.
"This is one of the biggest days in Joe Gibbs Racing's history," said Joe Gibbs, founder and owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, in a statement. "To be able to bring a driver the caliber of Carl Edwards on board to launch our fourth team is just a thrill."
Joe Gibbs Racing also announced that Mexico native, Daniel Suarez will join the organization to run full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in a multi-year deal and part time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Suarez, who currently leads the NASCAR Toyota Series point standings and also has two NASCAR K&N Pro Series East wins this season, will drive a #18 Toyota in every NASCAR Nationwide Series race in the 2015 season with backing coming from ARRIS as well.
JGR also announced that it has launched a diversity initiative with Escuderia TELMEX with support from ARRIS to provide developmental opportunities to deserving Mexican and Latin American drivers in the NASCAR Toyota Series in Mexico and other racing series under the JGR organization.
No word yet on how the rest of Joe Gibbs Racing's NASCAR Nationwide Series driver lineup for 2015.
