The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rolled into Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park for their ninth race of the 2014 season on Thursday night for the running of the Budweiser King of Beers 150 and Justin Bonsignore ended the night in victory lane. For Bonsignore it is his third win of the season and the sixth of his career.
The 26-year-old won the season-opening Ice Breaker 150 at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park and also won on July 19th at Monadnock Speedway. Bonsignore started ninth but took the lead from Doug Coby shortly after a restart on lap 136. He went onto lead the final 15 laps to score the victory.
Donny Lia started from his 20th career pole and led the first 75 laps until he pitted under a caution. The race saw eight total cautions for 37 laps. The first caution flew on lap 13 when Bobby Santos crashed in Turn 1. He finished last in the 25 car field.
Ron Silk and Ryan Preece brought out the third caution on lap 51 when they tangled in Turn 4. Both drivers would continue and finish in the top five at the end of the night.
When Lia pitted at lap 75 Glen Reen took over the lead and he led until lap 83 when Ron Silk took the lead. A big accident on lap 124 changed the look of the front of the field. Donny Lia and Tommy Barrett Jr were trailing Silk in second and third but the lap car of Patrick Emerling spun and collected both of them ending their races. Lia finished 22nd and Barrett 23rd. Emerling finished 20th.
The race restarted on lap 128 but then on lap 130 Rowan Pennink crashed in Turn 4. He finished 21st. The race would restart on lap 134 and Doug Coby grabbed the lead from Silk. Bonsignore then made his move for the lead on lap 136 past Coby. The next caution then flew on lap 138 for a crash between Eric Goodale and Ron Yuhas Jr who finished 18th and 19th. A red flag came out for four minutes.
The race restarted on lap 142 but the final caution would fly on lap 144 when Keith Rocco and John Beatty Jr made contact. That set up a restart with three laps left and Bonsignore was able to hold off a late challenge from Matt Hirschman to win by 0.316 seconds.
Doug Coby finished third, Ryan Preece fourth, and Ron Silk fifth. Rookie Timmy Solomito finished sixth, Ted Christopher seventh, Todd Szegedy eighth, Glen Reen ninth, and rookie Spencer Davis tenth. Also on the lead lap were Keith Rocco in 11th and Gary McDonald 12th. Last Friday's winner Woody Pitkat finished 16th.
Justin Bonsignore cut Doug Coby's points lead down to three points with the victory. There are still five races left in the season which will end at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park with Bonsignore looking for the season sweep of all three races at the track. Ted Christopher is 21 points back in third, Bobby Santos is fourth, Ryan Preece fifth, Ron Silk sixth, Matt Hirschman seventh, Timmy Solomito eighth, Woody Pitkat ninth, and Eric Goodale tenth.
The next race on the schedule will be a combination race with the Southern Tour at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday, August 20th.
