It was the ninth fastest pole speed in NASCAR history as Kevin Harvick took the pole for the Quicken Loans 400 today. The cars were flying around Michigan International Speedway, as 24 drivers in the field were all over 200mph. Harvick took the pole at a speed of 204.557mph. It’s Harvick’s ninth career Sprint Cup Series pole and the third of his 2014 season.
Starting in the second position is veteran Jeff Gordon with teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr starting in the third position and Aric Almirola starting in the fourth position. Starting in the fifth position is Paul Menard with Brad Keselowski starting in the sixth spot. Starting in the seventh spot is Jimmie Johnson with Kurt Busch starting eighth, Joey Logano ninth and Brian Vickers will round out the top ten. Starting 11this Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson is starting 12th. Larson's team did not make a run in the third round.
Those top 12 were in the final round of qualifying and advanced to the final session because they were the 12 fastest of the 24 drivers who competed in the second round of qualifying. Positions 13 to 24 were determined in the second round of qualifying.
Starting in the 13thspot is Kasey Kahne with Kyle Busch starting in the 14thspot. Starting in the 15thspot is Clint Bowyer with Martin Truex Jr starting in the 16thspot. Starting 17this Justin Allgaier with Greg Biffle starting 18th. Starting 19this Austin Dillon with Marcos Ambrose starting 20th. Starting 21stis Matt Kenseth with former teammate Carl Edwards rolling off 22nd. Starting in the 23rdspot is Trevor Bayne with Ryan Newman rolling off 24th.
There were three sessions in qualifying and positions 25 to 43 decided in the first session. Other notables in the field include, Tony Stewart in 26th, Danica Patrick in 27th, and Juan Pablo Montoya in 28th. Montoya is running his first race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series since November 2013. Montoya moved to IndyCar after last season but will run two races this season for Team Penske in the #12 Ford, the first one being this weekend at Michigan.
Denny Hamlin will start from the 29thspot with Ricky Stenhouse Jr starting 30th.
There were 44 cars for 43 spots meaning one driver went home. Everyone that qualfied 36thor higher locked themselves into the field for Sunday’s race on speed. The lowest team in owner points that did not qualify into the race on speed missed the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
