Denny Hamlin in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Toyota set a new track record at Pocono Raceway in Round 3 of qualifying on Friday to win the pole for Sunday's Pocono 400. His time of 49.610 seconds and 181.415 mph edged out Kurt Busch by 0.002 seconds to give Hamlin his second pole of 2014 and 19th of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career.
Hamlin has sat on the pole at Pocono two times before and both of those times he drove to victory lane at the end of the race.
Also making it to Round 3 to have a shot at the pole were Brad Keselowski who will start third, Kevin Harvick in fourth, Jeff Gordon fifth, Kyle Busch sixth, Joey Logano seventh, Dale Earnhardt Jr eighth, Brian Vickers ninth, Carl Edwards tenth, Austin Dillon 11th, and Tony Stewart 12th. Kurt Busch was fastest in Round 2 and Brian Vickers was fastest in Round 1 of knockout qualifying.
Making Round 2 but not advancing to Round 3 were the drivers who will start 13th to 24th on Sunday. Greg Biffle will roll of 13th, Kyle Larson 14th, Ryan Newman 15th, Danica Patrick 16th, Martin Truex Jr 17th, Jamie McMurray 18th, Clint Bowyer 19th, Jimmie Johnson 20th, AJ Allmendinger 21st, Aric Almirola 22nd, Paul Menard 23rd, and Justin Allgaier 24th.
Notable drivers that did not make it out of Round 1 were Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne. Kenseth will start in 26th and Kahne 27th. Alex Kennedy will make his first Sprint Cup Series start of 2014 in the Circle Sport Racing No. 33 Chevrolet from 42nd position. Dave Blaney spun in his Round 1 qualifying attempt but did not hit anything. He will start from 43rd as no teams had to go home without making the race.
