On Wednesday Athenian Motorsports announced that they will run John Wes Townley in 12 more NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2014 after the team and Townley made their 2014 series debut at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday.
The news just goes to show what having a sponsor committed to a driver can do for someone's racing career. Zaxby's will sponsor the Athenian Motorsports No. 25 Toyota in all 13 of the Nationwide Series races.
Townley is currently 11th in the Truck Series points after finishing 14th and 20th in the first two races of the season in the Wauters Motorsports No. 5 Toyota. He is currently sixth in the ARCA Racing Series points after four races in that season and is coming off a second place finish at Talladega on Saturday. He drives the No. 15 Toyota for Venturini Motorsports in that series.
The remaining 12 races Townley will drive in the Nationwide Series this season are both Charlotte Motor Speedway races, Kentucky Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Kansas Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway, and Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The 24-year-old from Watkinsville, Georgia, has made a total of 46 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts since debuting in 2008. He has yet to score a top 10 finish in the series and has an average finish of 26th. He had a breakout season in the Camping World Truck Series in 2013 when he drove for Red Horse Racing and had seven top 10's en route to 11th in the championship standings.Tags: ARCA Racing Series, Athenian Motorsports, Camping World Truck Series, John Wes Townley, Motorsports, NASCAR, Nationwide Series, Venturini Motorsports, Wauters Motorsports
