Cole Custer Wins Blue Ox 100 at Richmond International Raceway

Fresh off being named as a NASCAR Next 2014-15 member 16-year-old Cole Custer won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Blue Ox 100 at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday morning. The win is the third of Custer's East Series career after he won at Iowa and New Hampshire in 2013. He also won the 2014 season opener in Phoenix for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West making it three tracks that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races on and one more that the Nationwide Series visits that he has claimed victory at.

The Blue Ox 100 was scheduled to be run after the NASCAR Nationwide Series race last night but an over three-hour rain delay to the start of the ToyotaCare 250 forced the postponement of the East Series race until this morning.

Custer, who was running only his second East race of the five so far in 2014, started second alongside his Bill McAnally Racing teammate Nick Drake who won the pole on Friday. Drake would lead the first 48 laps before Custer passed him for the lead on lap 49 and went onto lead the final 52 circuits around the 0.75 mile track.

NASCAR Next member and current East Series points leader Ben Rhodes finished second with Nick Drake coming in third. Another NASCAR Next member Austin Hill finished fourth and Ronnie Bassett Jr was fifth. Cameron Hayley finished sixth, Brandon Jones seventh, Brodie Kostecki eighth, Jeremy Burns ninth, and another NASCAR Next member Jesse Little rounded out the top 10.

Gray Gaulding, who was also named to the new NASCAR Next class on Friday, finished 11th. Other notables in the finishing order of the 37 car field were Matt Tifft in 13th, Mackena Bell in 15th, Lee Pulliam in 21st, and NASCAR Next member Ryan Gifford was the last lead lap car in 22nd. Brennan Newberry was 26th, Eddie MacDonald was 27th, Daniel Suarez 32nd after having electrical issues, and Kenzie Ruston 35th. Ruston was also named to the NASCAR Next class but she was caught up in a crash on lap 35 along with Jordan Anderson and Clint King.

There were a total of five cautions for 32 of the 100 laps.

After five races in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East 2014 season Ben Rhodes has an 18 point lead in the standings over Gray Gaulding. Cameron Hayley is 22 points back in third. Daniel Saurez is 37 points back in fourth and Jesse Little is 39 back in fifth. Austin Hill is sixth, Kaz Grala seventh, Brandon Jones eighth, Nick Drake ninth, and Brodie Kostecki tenth.Cole Custer is 27th in points.

The next race up is the Casey's General Stores 150 at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, May 17th.
