Sponsorship goes a long way in racing and on Monday John Wes Townley picked up another opportunity for the 2014 season with the support of Zaxby's. Townley will drive the No. 15 Zaxby's Toyota in all 20 ARCA Racing Series events in 2014 for Venturini Motorsports. Earlier this offseason it was announced that Townley would also run the full NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule for Wauters Motorsports with sponsorship from Zaxby's on the No. 5 truck.
In 2013 the 24-year-old Townley won his first career ARCA race driving for Venturini Motorsports in the season-opening race at Daytona.
"I started my career in ARCA and moved up the ranks quickly because of the direction and exposure my sponsor (Zaxby's) was looking for at the time," Townley said. "As a driver it was a great opportunity and provided me with tremendous racing experience. Driving full-time again in the series is definitely a breath of fresh air. It gives me an opportunity to be more free-spirited and focus my efforts on consistency and winning a championship."
Townley ran the full ARCA season in 2008 for Robby Benton's team and scored eight top 10's in the 21 races. He finished seventh in the points that season. Since then Townley has only accumulated nine more ARCA starts.
Rich Lushes will come aboard to be Townley's crew chief in 2014. The team will certainly be one of the favorites to win the championship.
"I'm super excited for John Wes to be driving for us again this year," VMS's competition director, Billy Venturini said. "He's come into his own the last year or so. At this point in his career I feel he's got a chance to win every race he starts. The combination of Lushes and Townley should prove to be solid combination for the upcoming season."
Townley will have a busy season behind the wheel juggling his ARCA races with the Truck Series schedule as well.
In 2013 Townley completed his first full season in one of NASCAR's division by scoring seven top 10's and finishing 11th in the Truck Series points. He drove for Red Horse Racing in the No. 7 truck but for this season will move over to the Wauters Motorsports team.
There was no word on whether or not Townley will drive any NASCAR Nationwide Series races for VMS in 2014. He qualified for two of the three attempts he made for the team in 2013 with a best finish of 17th.
