Hornish held out for a competitive ride not wanting to race for a team full time if the team would not be competitive.

"Im excited about driving the No. 54 Monster Energy car this year. Its a great opportunity for me," said Hornish in a release. "Its the best possible situation for me to jump into great equipment and have the opportunity to go right out and win. After working with Penske for 10 years and now to have the opportunity to partner with Joe Gibbs Racing, I couldn't have asked for anything better. These are great people, top notch. To partner with Kyle, and all this team provides, with the support of Joe and J.D., it provides me with everything I need to succeed. It's also a phenomenal opportunity for me to partner with a market leader such as Monster Energy. The brand identity and fan following that goes along with this sponsor is super. I cant wait to get into that car!"

The No. 54 team finished second in the NASCAR Nationwide Series owner points standings in 2013 falling just one point shy of the championship. Kyle Busch won 12 times in his 26 starts in the car last year. Hornish comes over from Penske Racing where he finished second in the driver points standings by a margin of three points. He has two career Nationwide Series wins including last year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway where he finished just ahead of Kyle Busch.

Hornish has also made 130 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts all with Penske Racing but parted ways with the organization after 2013 due to a lack of sponsorship that the team had for him.

The seven races that Hornish will pilot the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota are at Talladega Superspeedway on May 3rd, Iowa Speedway on May 18th, Road America on June 21st, Chicagoland Speedway on July 19th, Iowa Speedway on August 2nd, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 16th, and Kentucky Speedway on September 20th.
