Martin Truex Jr will be joining Furniture Row Racing for the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season in year one of a multi-year deal between him and the Denver, Colorado based team. He will pilot the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet.
Truex decided to part ways with Michael Waltrip Racing, where he has been since joining them in 2010, after his sponsor NAPA Auto Parts decided to leave the team in 2014 due to the Richmond scandal on September 7th when teammate Clint Bowyer spun to help Truex make the Chase. Truex was removed from the Chase after a points penalty.
“This is a big deal for me,” said Truex, who signed his deal Thursday. “I’m very excited about the opportunity to drive the Furniture Row No. 78 for Joe (Garone, general manager) and Barney (Visser, team owner). I’ve really been impressed with their organization. Obviously, I think everybody here has been impressed with what they have accomplished this year being a single-car team based out of Denver."
The 33-year old Truex is the 2004 and 2005 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion. He has made 294 career Sprint Cup Series starts and has two wins including this season at Sonoma Raceway.
“Martin can win races,” Garone said. “He is a Chase-level driver. He is going to fit into the program. It’s not just Martin, it is Martin and the family, the Truex family. It’s a fit, it really is. We are excited about all the opportunities that come along with Martin being on board, from how he represents our sponsors to what he can get done behind the wheel."
Michael Waltrip Racing released a statement on Friday expressing their happiness that Truex was able to find another competitive ride after parting ways with them.
Truex will finish out the 2013 season in the No. 56 NAPA Toyota for MWR and was fastest in Friday's first practice at Texas Motor Speedway.
