The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour ended its season on Sunday at Thompson Speedway. Rowan Pennink won his second career race and first since the 2010 season but at the end of the Sunoco World Series 150 presented by Xtra Mart it was Ryan Preece who was celebrating his first career Tour championship.
Preece entered the race with a 26 point lead over defending champion Doug Coby and only needed a finish of 22nd or better to capture the title. The 22-year-old led 33 laps and finished third to claim the title.
“We definitely had a really good car,” Preece said. “Things didn’t work out our way [to win the race], but the championship – the big picture – did and that’s what it’s all about. We race all year for this big crown at the end.”
It was his tenth top five finish in the 14 race season.
Pennink made a pass on Donny Lia on lap 133 of 150 and went onto a win by 0.971 seconds over Lia. The win ended a 48-race winless streak of Pennink.
Finishing in fourth was Bobby Santos who was the pole sitter. He led a race high 87 laps. Finishing fifth was Ron Silk with Max Zachem sixth, Matt Hirschman seventh, Doug Coby eighth, Todd Szegedy ninth, and Justin Bonsignore tenth. Twenty-two of the 29 cars finished on the lead lap.
There were 10 caution flags for a total of 40 laps.
Preece won the title officially by 32 points over Doug Coby. Donny Lia finished third in points 53 back. Rowan Pennink jumped up to fourth in the standings and Mike Stefanik finished fifth. Todd Szegedy was sixth, Ron Silk seventh, Justin Bonsignore eighth, Woody Pitkat ninth, and Ted Christopher tenth.
In all eight different drivers won at least one NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race in 2013 with Preece having the most with four.
