On Friday Will Power led a Team Penske sweep of the top three places in qualifying to win the pole for Saturday night's MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway. All eyes will be on the championship battle between Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Penske's Helio Castroneves at the IZOD IndyCar Series season finale.
Will Power got the one bonus point for the pole after edging out his teammate Castroneves. In doing so he kept the Brazilian from gaining one point on Dixon. Dixon leads by 25 points and can clinch his third career IndyCar Series championship by finishing in fifth or better.
Power's two lap average of 220.775 mph landed him on his third pole of the season and the 32nd of his career which is tied with Michael Andretti for seventh on the all-time list. Castroneves, who is trying to win his first championship, had a speed of 219.677 mph which landed him in second. The third Penske car driven by AJ Allmendinger took the third position.
Scott Dixon qualified in seventh with a speed of 217.979 mph. Both Castroneves and Dixon will incur 10 spot grid penalties though due to changing engines as they want to be sure to have the best equipment as possible in the 500 mile race.
Qualifying in fourth was Sebastien Bourdais as he is making his final start for Dragon Racing before moving to KVSH Racing in 2014. Charlie Kimball was fifth and James Jakes sixth. Eighth went to Marco Andretti with Ed Carpenter ninth and Josef Newgarden tenth.
James Hinchcliffe qualified 11th, Tony Kanaan 12th, and Alex Tagliani 13th. Tagliani is subbing for the injured Dario Franchitti. Carlos Munoz is driving the Andretti Autosport car normally driven by EJ Viso and he qualified 14th. Qualifying 15th was Ryan Hunter-Reay with Simon Pagenaud 16th, Oriol Servia 17th, Graham Rahal 18th, JR Hildebrand 19th, Tristan Vautier 20th, Simona De Silvestro 21st, and Sebastian Saavedra 22nd. Justin Wilson did not take time after having a mechanical issue leaving pit road for his attempt and Pippa Mann and Takuma Sato also did not take time after practice crashes. They will line up in positions 23 to 25.
The MAVTV 500 can be seen at 8 p.m. ET tonight on the NBC Sports Network.
