The 2013 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour ended its season on Thursday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway around the short track on the front stretch of the facility. By taking the green flag George Brunnhoelzl III won his fourth championship and third straight but it was Burt Myers who won the UNOH Southern Slam 150.
Ryan Preece, the Whelen Modified Tour points leader, was making his third Southern Tour start of the season and won his third pole. He was on his way to picking up his second win in the three races and led the first 138 of 150 laps. Then Preece suffered a blown engine which allowed Burt Myers to take over the lead on lap 139. Preece finished in 15th of the 22 cars.
Myers, went onto lead the final 12 circuits and win by a margin of 1.140 seconds over Kyle Ebersole. For Myers it was his third win in the 12 Southern Tour races in 2013 and his 11th of his career.
Brunnhoelzl could have parked after running one lap and still been crowned the 2013 champ but of course he did not do that. The West Babylon, New York driver raced to a third place finish. He also won the Whelen Southern Modified Tour title in 2009, 2011, and 2012.
Finishing in fourth was Tim Brown with Danny Bohn fifth, AJ Winstead sixth, John Smith seventh, Jason Myers eighth, Luke Felming ninth, Thomas Stinson tenth, and David Calabrese was the final lead lap car in 11th. Andy Seuss, who had won three straight races entering Charlotte, finished one lap down in 12th.
Officially Brunnhoelzl won the championship by 31 points over Kyle Ebersole. With the win Burt Myers edged ahead of Andy Seuss to finish in third by one point. Tim Brown was fifth in the final points, John Smith sixth, Jason Myers seventh, Luke Fleming eighth, Danny Bohn ninth, and JR Bertuccio tenth.
