IndyCar Series Title Could Be Decided This Weekend at Houston’s Doubleheader

There are only three races left on the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule and two of those races will take place this weekend in Houston. The Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston Race 1 will be held on Saturday and the Race 2 of the doubleheader will be on Sunday. When the IndyCar Series leaves Houston the championship could be decided.

Currently Helio Castroneves is leading the points by 49 markers over Scott Dixon. Castroneves is looking for his first career championship after finishing runner up twice and finishing third or fourth six other times. Scott Dixon meanwhile has some catching up to do as he looks for his third career title.

It seems like a two man race with three races to go since Simon Pagenaud is 70 points back in third, Marco Andretti 71 back in fourth, and last year's champion Ryan Hunter-Reay 74 back in fifth.

Dixon, for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, needs a huge race weekend in Houston to pull within striking distance in the October 19th season finale at Auto Club Speedway. A sweep of the doubleheader would do it. The winner of an IndyCar race in the current points system gains about 10-12 points on the driver who finishes second in the race so wins for Dixon in Houston would certainly put the pressure on Castroneves in the finale.

It has been consistency which has built Castroneves' points lead with Team Penske. He has finished in the top ten in the last 12 races and 15 of the 16 in 2013. His lone win during this ultra competitive IndyCar Series season which has seen 10 different winners came at Texas on June 8th.

Contact has been on the rise in the IndyCar races on road and street courses so much of the same can be expected in the doubleheader this weekend. Castroneves will need to try to avoid those situations and avoid a disastrous finish that would also pull Dixon back into the picture.

For Dixon though one bad race in Houston could put him too far behind Castroneves to have a chance to win the championship at Auto Club Speedway. The racing will be exciting this weekend with the unknown of who will win and also whether the championship will take a turn in either the favor of Castroneves or Dixon.
