Richard Childress Racing announced the addition of Ryan Newman to the team's 2014 plans on Monday afternoon. Newman will drive the team's #31 Caterpillar Chevrolet for 2014 and beyond. Newman comes over from Stewart-Haas Racing where he's spent the last five seasons. Newman replaces Jeff Burton in the #31 Chevrolet, who had been in that seat since 2005.
"About five years ago, Richard (Childress) and I talked about me joining RCR before I signed with my current team, but things just didn't work out,'' Newman said in a statement issued by the team. "However, we were able to make it happen this time and I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my career. RCR has a long history of winning races and championships, and I want to add to that tradition."
Newman brings 17 career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories to the organization including the 2008 Daytona 500. He has made 430 career Sprint Cup Series starts and his best points finish has been sixth, which he has done three times. His last win came in August at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Team owner Richard Childress is excited to add Newman to the fold.
"We have high expectations for this No. 31 team. Ryan has proven himself to be a great driver and I'm looking forward to winning races with him," said Childress.
Newman will join both Paul Menard and Austin Dillon at Richard Childress Racing next season. The team also announced that current crew chief of the #31 Chevrolet, Luke Lambert will remain in that role in 2014.
