At the age of 19 Dylan Lupton became the newest NASCAR K&N Pro Series West winner on Saturday evening at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. It was Lupton's 12th career race in the series and he did not lead a lap in any of his 11 previous races.
He only led six in the NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Toyota but they were the last six laps the most important ones in the race. Lupton took the lead when leader Eric Holmes and Giles Thornton crashed working lap 145. Holmes finished 12th and Thornton 13th both six laps down.
After gaining the lead Lupton then held off Greg Pursley over the final four green flag laps of racing. Pursley finished second 0.194 seconds back and led a total of 43 laps.
Derek Thorn led the most laps in the race with 50 and finished third. Braeden Havens finished a career best fourth in only his tenth West Series start and first of 2013. Carl Harr was the final car on the lead lap around the .646 mile oval in fifth.
Taylor Cuzick finished sixth, Jack Sellers seventh, Daryl Harr eighth, and Matt Tifft ninth all one lap down. Cameron Hayley was on his fifth pole of the season and led the first 30 laps but finished four laps down in tenth. Michael Self finished 16th.
After nine of 15 races Derek Thorn leads the points standings by 23 over Cameron Hayley. Michael Self is third, 27 points back. Greg Pursley is fourth, 37 back and Dylan Lupton is 52 points behind in fifth.
Next Saturday, August 24th the K&N Pro Series West races at Spokane County Raceway for the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150.
